People use these charts to group things. These groups are called categories. Examples include shoe sizes or months of the year. One side of the chart shows the categories. The other side shows the measured value.
Some charts use special ways to show data. A grouped bar chart puts bars side by side. This helps you see more than one thing at once. A stacked bar chart puts bars on top of each other. 
Many people think William Playfair invented the bar chart. He made a chart in 1781. It showed trade for Scotland. Other old drawings might be very early versions of these charts.
A bar chart is a clever way to see information. It uses rectangular bars to show different groups. These groups are called categories. Categories can be things like shoe sizes or months of the year. 
Charts work by using two different lines called axes. One axis shows the specific categories you are comparing. The other axis represents a measured value. 
History tells us about the people who first used these tools. Many people believe William Playfair invented the bar chart. He lived from 1759 to 1824. He made a famous graph in his book, The Commercial and Political Atlas. This chart showed the exports and imports of Scotland. It covered the year from Christmas 1780 to Christmas 1781. 
There are many ways to build a complex chart. A grouped bar chart puts two or more bars side by side. These bars often use different colors to show different things. For example, a shop owner might use colors to show two different stores. 
Some special charts even change the width of the bars. These are called variable-width or variwide bar charts. In these charts, the bars do not all have the same width.
A bar chart is a visual tool used to present categorical data. This type of data involves grouping information into discrete, qualitative categories. Common examples of categories include months of the year, age groups, shoe sizes, or different types of animals. 
To build a bar chart, you must use two perpendicular lines called axes. One axis displays the specific categories being compared. The other axis represents a measured value, such as a count or a percentage. 
Accuracy in bar charts is very important for clear communication. Most experts suggest starting the scale at zero. If a chart does not start at zero, it can make values that are actually similar look deceptively different. This happens because the relative lengths of the bars no longer match the actual data. There are exceptions to this rule, however. For example, temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit use an arbitrary zero. Logarithmic charts also do not use a standard zero because that value would be infinitely far away.
History shows that different people have contributed to these visual tools. Many sources credit William Playfair, who lived from 1759 to 1824, with inventing the bar chart. His work included a graph titled "Exports and Imports of Scotland to and from different parts for one Year from Christmas 1780 to Christmas 1781." This appeared in his book, The Commercial and Political Atlas. Interestingly, some "proto bar charts" appeared much earlier. Diagrams in a book called The Latitude of Forms showed the velocity of accelerating objects. These were published about 300 years before Playfair's work.
More complex data can be shown using grouped or stacked bar charts. In a grouped, or clustered, bar chart, two or more bars are placed side by side for each category. These bars are often color-coded to represent different variables. 
Stacked bar charts, also called composite bar charts, work differently. Instead of placing bars side by side, they stack them on top of each other. 
There is also a specialized version called a variable-width or variwide bar chart. In these charts, the bars do not have a uniform width.
