Baltica then moved north toward another land called Laurentia. This movement opened a sea called the Iapetus Ocean. Eventually, the lands crashed together. This collision closed the ocean. It also made mountain ranges like the Urals. These mountains mark the edge of the old land. Baltica's history is a long story of moving and joining.

This land moved in many ways over a long time. First, three large blocks collided to form Baltica. These blocks were Fennoscandia, Sarmatia, and Volgo-Uralia. They joined together between 2.0 and 1.7 billion years ago. Later, Baltica and another land called Laurentia moved together. They drifted away from the Equator toward the South Pole. This movement opened a wide sea called the Iapetus Ocean.

Scientists have studied these movements for many years. They look at fossils and rocks to see where land used to be. For example, they found special sea animals called trilobites. These animals lived on Baltica during the Early and Middle Ordovician periods. By looking at these fossils, researchers can track the land's path. They also study how mountains formed when lands crashed together. This helps us understand how our world changed.

There are many important facts about Baltica's edges. Its western margin is the Caledonide orogen. This area stretches from the Scandinavian Mountains to Svalbard. The eastern margin is the Timanide orogen. This edge goes north to the Novaya Zemlya islands. The Ural Mountains also mark its eastern side. These mountains formed when Baltica hit other lands. This happened during the mid and late Palaeozoic eras.

Today, it makes up much of northwestern Eurasia. This includes Europe north of the Trans-European Suture Zone and west of the Ural Mountains. At its very center lies the East European Craton. A craton is a thick, stable, and ancient part of a continent. This core is incredibly old, dating back more than three billion years. It once served as a major building block for the supercontinent Rodinia.

The formation of Baltica began through a series of massive collisions. Between 2.0 and 1.7 billion years ago, three large continental blocks merged. These blocks were Fennoscandia, Sarmatia, and Volgo-Uralia. Sarmatia and Volgo-Uralia first joined to create a proto-craton called Proto-Baltica. Later, this unit collided with Fennoscandia to complete the continent. The lines where these blocks met are called sutures. These sutures remained active during the Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic eras.

Baltica has moved across the globe in complex ways. Around 1.1 to 0.9 billion years ago, it was joined with Amazonia and West Africa. These pieces rotated 75 degrees clockwise relative to the continent of Laurentia. This movement helped form the supercontinent Rodinia. Once Rodinia broke up around 0.6 billion years ago, Baltica became an isolated continent. It remained separate for about 200 million years. During this time, it drifted toward the South Pole near the temperate mid-latitudes.

As Baltica drifted, it interacted with the Iapetus Ocean. Between 750 and 600 million years ago, Baltica and Laurentia rotated together. They began to drift away from the Equator toward the South Pole. This movement opened the Iapetus Ocean between them. Around 425 million years ago, a major event called the Scandian Orogeny occurred. This was a final collision between Norway and the Scotland-Greenland block. This collision closed the Iapetus Ocean entirely.

The margins of Baltica tell stories of growth and collision. The northern margin expanded during the Timanian Orogeny around 555 million years ago. During this time, Baltica added new blocks like the Timan-Pechora Basin. This expansion happened alongside the Varanger glaciations, often called "Snowball Earth." The western margin is known as the Caledonide orogen. It stretches from the Scandinavian Mountains all the way to Svalbard. The eastern margin is the Timanide orogen, which reaches the Novaya Zemlya islands.

The eastern edge of Baltica is also defined by the Ural Mountains. These mountains formed during the mid and late Palaeozoic eras. This happened when Baltica collided with a series of landmasses called Kazakhstania-Siberia. The Uralide orogen contains records of at least two collisions with island arcs. These island arcs were pieces of land that formed in the ocean. The mountains show a straight chain because of strike-slip movements. These movements occurred between 300 and 290 million years ago.

Scientists use many clues to reconstruct this ancient history. They look for endemic fossils, which are species found only in one specific place. During the Ordovician, unique trilobites and brachiopods lived in the waters near Baltica. Finding these fossils in places like Kazakhstan helps map the old boundaries. Researchers also study detrital zircon, which are tiny mineral grains. These grains can be 2 to 1 billion years old. By matching these minerals and fossils, scientists can prove which lands were once connected.
