Unlike most amphibians, these creatures exhibit a trait called neoteny. This means they reach sexual maturity without undergoing metamorphosis. Most salamanders start as aquatic larvae and transform into land-dwelling adults. Axolotls skip this change and remain fully aquatic for their entire lives. They keep their juvenile features, such as their feathery external gills. This unusual way of living makes them a vital subject for biological study.

To understand how an axolotl breathes, we must look at its gills. Three pairs of external gill stalks, called rami, extend from behind the head. These stalks are lined with tiny filaments known as fimbriae. These filaments increase the surface area available for gas exchange. This process allows the animal to pull oxygen from the water. Axolotls also use a method called buccal pumping to breathe. They gulp air from the water's surface to fill their lungs. This can happen in a two-stroke or four-stroke manner using compression forces.

Axolotls are famous for their incredible ability to perform tissue regeneration. Most animals heal by forming scar tissue, but axolotls do not. They can regrow entire limbs, tails, and even parts of their eyes and heart. They can even restore portions of their central nervous system, including parts of the brain. This process requires three specific things: a wound epithelium, nerve signaling, and specific limb axis cells. First, a wound epidermis quickly covers the injury site. Then, cells divide to form a mass called a blastema.
