In the 11th century, the Chinese inventor Su Song built a water clock tower. This tower featured mechanical figurines that chimed the hours.

In the Middle Ages, the tradition continued in the Byzantine Empire. In 949, an ambassador described singing birds and moving lions in a palace. In the 8th century, wind-powered automata were built in Baghdad. These were statues that turned with the wind over palace domes. The Muslim alchemist Jābir ibn Hayyān also wrote recipes for artificial animals. These included snakes and scorpions that could be controlled.
