Long ago, thinkers began to wonder about this. They came up with an idea called atomism. This idea says everything is made of tiny bits. We call these bits atoms.

In ancient Greece, a man named Leucippus started this idea. His student, Democritus, wrote a lot about it. He said atoms are too small to see. He believed atoms float in empty space. He called this space the "void." Atoms are always moving and hitting each other. Some atoms might have hooks. Others might look like eyes or be very smooth.

Different shapes of atoms make different things. For example, jagged atoms might taste bitter. Smooth atoms might taste sweet.

Plato had a different view. He thought atoms were shaped like math parts. He linked them to fire, air, water, and earth. He used shapes like cubes and triangles.

Another thinker, Aristotle, did not believe in atoms. He thought matter was one continuous piece. He did not think a void could exist. People studied these ideas for a very long time.

People have been thinking about atoms for a very long time. In ancient Greece, a man named Leucippus is credited with starting this idea. His student was Democritus, who wrote many books about it.

We only know about his work through fragments and quotes from others. Democritus believed atoms were infinite in number and variety. They have always existed and come in many shapes. Some might have hooks, while others look like eyes.

Kanāda in India proposed indivisible particles called paramāṇu. Later, Buddhist thinkers like Dharmakirti spoke of atoms that flash in and out of existence. Plato had a different idea about how atoms look. He thought they were shaped like mathematical solids. He linked these shapes to fire, air, water, and earth.

He used shapes like the cube for earth and the tetrahedron for fire. Aristotle disagreed with all of this. He thought matter was continuous and did not believe a void could exist.

These old ideas eventually led to modern science.

In the early 19th century, chemists found evidence for particles. John Dalton gave them the name "atom" because of the old Greek word. This helped connect ancient philosophy to new discoveries. Today, we talk about elementary particles in science. These particles are like a modern version of the philosophical atoms.

This theory suggests that the entire world is built from these tiny parts. Atomism is a reductive argument. This means it claims that nothing truly exists except for atoms and the void. The void is an empty space where atoms move. All other things are merely collections of atoms.

How does this mechanism work in the physical world? The theory describes a process of constant motion and collision. Atoms float within an infinite vacuum called the void. They are constantly moving and bumping into one another.

These random collisions cause atoms to cluster together. The specific shape, arrangement, and position of these clusters create macroscopic substances. For example, the way atoms pack together determines if an object feels hot or cold. These sensations are not properties of the objects themselves. Instead, they are results of how atoms interact with our senses.

Different thinkers have proposed different types of atoms. The ancient Greeks, like Democritus, believed atoms came in infinite varieties. Some atoms might be shaped like hooks, while others are shaped like eyes. They might be convex or concave.

In contrast, the Pythagoreans held a view called unit-point atomism. This theory suggested atoms were infinitesimally small points that still possessed corporeality.

In ancient India, the Vaiśeṣika school developed a similar idea. Kanāda proposed indivisible particles known as paramāṇu. Later, Buddhist thinkers like Dharmakirti described atoms called kalapas. These atoms were momentary, meaning they flashed in and out of existence instantaneously.

History shows that atomism has deep roots in many cultures. In ancient Greece, Leucippus is credited with inventing the concept. His student, Democritus, expanded these ideas significantly. Democritus wrote over eighty treatises on the subject. Although his original books did not survive, we know his ideas through fragments and quotes.

His work was a reaction against the philosopher Parmenides. Parmenides believed in monism, the idea that existence is a single, unchanging mass. He argued that the void could not exist. Therefore, he believed motion and change were merely illusions. Democritus rejected this, arguing that change is real and driven by atoms in the void.

Plato offered a different, more geometric perspective on the building blocks of nature. He did not believe atoms were just random shapes crashing together. Instead, he argued they were based on an unchanging mathematical model.

Plato identified four simple bodies: fire, air, water, and earth. He believed these were made of geometric solids.

For example, he assigned the tetrahedron to fire because its sharp edges suggested mobility. He assigned the cube to earth because its flat base suggested stability. These shapes were made of triangles, which could be reassembled to explain how substances change.

Not everyone accepted the existence of atoms. Aristotle was a major critic of atomism. He argued that the four elements were continuous rather than made of particles.

Aristotle also believed that a void could not exist because it violated physical principles. He proposed a theory of hylomorphism. This idea suggests every object is a compound of matter and an immaterial form. The matter provides the potential, while the form gives the object its specific identity. He also spoke of minima naturalia, which are the smallest parts of a substance. Unlike atoms, these parts were not necessarily indivisible.

Atomism eventually connected to modern science through experimental evidence. In the early 19th century, chemists began finding evidence for particles of chemical matter. John Dalton chose the name "atom" for these particles. He used the term from the long-standing atomist philosophy.

While the connection to ancient philosophy is tenuous, it provided a bridge to new ideas. Today, scientists study elementary particles. These are considered the modern analogue of the philosophical atoms discussed by the Greeks.
