Asunción has a very deep history in South America. It is one of the oldest cities on the continent. Because of this, people call it "the Mother of Cities."
The history of the site began with a fort. Juan de Salazar y Espinosa established this fort on 15 August 1537. He named it after the religious feast held on that day. In 1542, natives destroyed Buenos Aires. This caused the Spaniards to flee to Asunción. Consequently, the city became the center of a large Spanish colonial province. This province included parts of Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Later, in 1811, Asunción played a key role in Paraguay's independence. Rebels met secretly at the home of Juana María de Lara. They planned an ambush against the Spanish Governor, Bernardo de Velasco.
Life in Asunción changed significantly during the 19th century. Under President Carlos Antonio López, the country saw major progress. He implemented new economic policies and built more than 400 schools. He also built metallurgic factories and South America's first railroad service. However, the country later faced the Paraguayan War from 1864 to 1870.
Today, Asunción is a strategic hub in the Southern Cone. It is located roughly equidistant between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This location promotes economic growth and makes it a regional hub. The city is the headquarters for the three state powers: executive, legislative, and judicial. It is also the home of the Permanent Review Court of Mercosur.
Asunción faces modern challenges like many large metropolises. The city deals with intense traffic and insufficient services due to rapid growth.
