It follows a small village of Gauls in 50 BC. These villagers resist the Roman Republic Army led by Julius Caesar. They achieve this through a magic potion. This potion is brewed by a druid named Getafix. The potion gives the drinker superhuman strength for a short time. The series is a massive part of French culture. It explores history through a lens of wit and adventure.

The stories center on two main characters. Asterix is a small, shrewd warrior. He relies on intelligence and wit rather than raw power. His best friend is Obelix. Obelix is a large, strong man. He is somewhat dim-witted compared to Asterix. Obelix gained his permanent strength because he fell into the magic potion as a boy.

Together, they travel to Rome and many foreign lands. Some adventures take place in their village in Gaul. For volumes 4 through 29, the settings often alternated. Even-numbered volumes were set abroad, while odd-numbered volumes stayed in Gaul.

The creators of the series were René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The series debuted in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. Goscinny wrote the scripts and Uderzo provided the illustrations. They worked together until Goscinny passed away in 1977. Uderzo then took over both writing and drawing. He continued the series until 2009. A new creative team now manages the franchise. Jean-Yves Ferri writes the scripts and Didier Conrad provides the artwork. The most recent volume was released by writer Fabcaro on 23 October 2025.

Managing the rights to Asterix has been a complex process. Initially, the magazine Pilote was taken over by Georges Dargaud. After Goscinny died, Uderzo created Éditions Albert René. However, Dargaud kept the rights to the first 24 albums. The families of the creators sued Dargaud in 1990. They won the legal battle in 1998. Uderzo later sold his publishing stake to Hachette in 2008. This decision caused some family disagreement. Sylvie Uderzo felt the sale betrayed the character to industry men. Anne Goscinny, however, supported the continuation of the series.

The commercial success of Asterix is truly massive.

This park attracts an average of 2.3 million visitors every year. The name Asterix itself has deep roots. It is close to the Greek word "astron" and the Latin "astrum." Both of these words mean "star." In 1965, France launched its first satellite and named it Astérix. This shows how the character is woven into French identity.

To maintain a "100% Gaulish production," specific steps were taken. Studios Idéfix was started in 1974. Studio 58 opened later in 2016. These steps help keep the creative process under control. They also ensure the use of French manpower. Today, a new album is published every two years. Each new release has print figures of about 5 million. The estimated readership for the series is 20 million people. This keeps the legacy of Goscinny and Uderzo alive for new generations.
