Armadillos are highly significant in medical and biological research. Because they have low body temperatures, they are susceptible to leprosy. Their temperature is often between 86 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit. This range is similar to human skin, making it hospitable to the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. Consequently, armadillos serve as a natural reservoir for the disease in places like Texas and Florida.

In the genus Dasypus, armadillos offer a unique look at reproduction. These animals exhibit polyembryony, which is the production of multiple embryos from a single egg. This results in the birth of four genetically identical quadruplets. Because these offspring are clones, they are perfect for scientific and medical testing.
