Arkhangelsk is a major city located in northwestern Russia.

The history of the area involves many different groups of people. Vikings likely knew the region as Bjarmaland. A traveler named Ohthere of Hålogaland described a place with many buildings near the White Sea around the year 890. Later, in 1027, Vikings led by Thorir Hund reportedly raided the area. In 1989, local farm workers discovered a massive silver treasure near the mouth of the Dvina. This hoard contained many coins from places like Germany, England, and Hungary. Scientists are still researching whether this find proves early Russian colonization or suggests a large trading society.
In the 12th century, Novgorodians established a monastery dedicated to Archangel Michael in the river estuary. At that time, the main trade center was Kholmogory, located southeast of the modern city. The area later became a site of conflict between Norwegian and Russian interests. In 1419, Norwegian ships entered the White Sea and plundered several settlements. This included the Archangel Michael Monastery. However, by 1478, the territory was taken over by Ivan III. This moved the region under the control of the Grand Duchy of Moscow.
Arkhangelsk became a global trade gateway in the 16th century. In 1553, English ships attempted to find the Northeast Passage to China. One ship, the Edward Bonaventure, ended up in the White Sea near the mouth of the Dvina. This event led to trade agreements between the English and the Russian ruler, Ivan the Terrible. English merchants formed the Company of Merchant Adventurers to send ships to the region annually. Dutch merchants also began trading in the White Sea during the 1560s. By the 17th century, the Dutch became the primary maritime traders in the area.
The city's importance shifted significantly under Peter the Great. In 1693, he ordered the creation of a state shipyard in Arkhangelsk. He even had several ships, like the Svyatoy Pyotr, sailing in the White Sea by 1694. However, the river was often blocked by ice for five months each year. Because of this limitation, Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg in 1703. He issued a decree in 1722 to move international trade to the Baltic Sea. This caused the economy of Arkhangelsk to decline throughout the 18th century.
The city saw a revival in the late 19th century when a railway connected it to Moscow. This allowed for the large-scale export of timber. Arkhangelsk also played a role in major 20th-century conflicts. During the Russian Civil War, it was a stronghold for the White Army. During World War II, the city was a critical destination for Arctic convoys. These convoys brought essential supplies to the Soviet Union. During the German invasion in 1941, planners even chose Arkhangelsk as a theoretical limit for German control.
Modern Arkhangelsk is a center for education and industry. The Northern (Arctic) Federal University was formed in 2010 through a merger of several institutions. The city is also home to the Northern State Medical University. Transportation is supported by the Northern Railway and two airports, Talagi and Vaskovo.
