Ariel has a very interesting way it works inside. It likely has a rocky core at its center. This core is surrounded by a thick mantle made of ice. Some scientists think there might be a liquid ocean hidden under the ice. They believe liquid water could be pushed up from below. As this water reaches the surface, it freezes into a new icy crust. This process might be what creates the many deep grooves and canyons seen on the surface.

We first learned about Ariel on 24 October 1851. A man named William Lassell discovered the moon on that day. He also discovered another moon called Umbriel at the same time.

The name Ariel comes from characters in famous books. It is the name of a spirit in Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. It is also a character in a poem called The Rape of the Lock. These names were suggested by John Herschel in 1852.

Ariel orbits Uranus at a distance of about 190,000 km.

It takes about 2.5 Earth days to complete one orbit. Because of this, one side of the moon always faces the planet. This is called tidal lock. The moon also has very extreme seasons. Because Uranus orbits the Sun on its side, Ariel's poles can face the Sun directly. This means the poles see permanent light or dark for half of a Uranian year. One Uranian year lasts 42 Earth years.

Most of what we know comes from a single trip by a space probe. The Voyager 2 probe flew past Uranus in 1986. During this flyby, it imaged about 35% of Ariel's surface. Even though it was a long time ago, those pictures gave us huge amounts of data. We can see many craters and ridges in those images. While there are no current plans to visit Ariel again, scientists have proposed sending new probes. They hope to learn more about the hidden ocean and the moon's rocky heart.

Some researchers believe a subsurface ocean might exist beneath the ice. This liquid ocean could be maintained by tidal heating or radiogenic heat.

The surface of Ariel is very active and varied. It features extensive cratered terrain. This terrain is cross-cut by many scarps, canyons, grabens, and ridges.

Some scientists suggest these features come from geological activity. They propose that liquid water might ooze out from a subsurface ocean. As the water reaches the surface, it pushes the icy crust apart. This process is similar to how the Mid-Atlantic Ridge works on Earth. Instead of lava, Ariel uses liquid water. The water then freezes to create a new icy crust.

Ariel's orbit and rotation create unique conditions. It orbits Uranus at a distance of about 190,000 km. Its orbital period is roughly 2.5 Earth days. This period matches its rotational period, causing a state called tidal lock. This means one side always faces Uranus.

Chemical studies reveal much about Ariel's makeup. Infrared spectroscopy has identified water ice, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. The carbon dioxide is mostly on the trailing hemisphere. The presence of ammonia is important for scientists. Ammonia can lower the freezing point of water. This makes a subsurface ocean more likely to remain liquid. These chemicals are easily broken down in space. Their presence suggests something is replenishing them from the interior. This connects the moon's chemistry directly to its possible geological activity.
