In the summer, it can be 0 °C. In the winter, it can drop to −60 °C. Sometimes, it gets as cold as −82 °C.

People live in several bases. Argentina has six permanent bases.

Argentine Antarctica is a large part of the icy continent.

This area includes the Antarctic Peninsula and a big triangular section. This triangle reaches all the way to the South Pole. The territory is defined by specific lines called meridians and parallels. It sits near the South American continent. Argentina claims this land as its own national territory. However, other countries like Chile and the United Kingdom also have claims in this same area.

These different claims do not have widespread international recognition.

Living in this region is a very cold experience. The land is mostly covered by thick ice and glaciers. On average, the ice is 2 kilometres deep.

The weather changes a lot between the seasons. In the summer, temperatures can be around 0 °C. In the winter, it gets much colder, often reaching −60 °C. Sometimes, the temperature can even drop to −82 °C. On rare days, it might even rise to 18 °C.

Argentina has been exploring this frozen land for a long time. In 1815, Guillermo Brown saw what he believed was Antarctic land. Later, in 1902, José María Sobral became the first Argentine to step on Antarctica. He worked with a Swedish expedition. In 1904, Argentina took over a weather station on Laurie Island.

This became the Orcadas Base. It is the oldest permanent human settlement in Antarctica. This important event is celebrated as the Day of the Argentine Antarctic.

Today, the area is managed as a part of the Tierra del Fuego province.

To keep these bases running, people need many supplies. They use special ships to travel through the ice.

Argentine Antarctica is a specific region of the Antarctic continent claimed by Argentina. This territory includes the Antarctic Peninsula and a large triangular section of land. The triangle extends south to the South Pole. Its borders are defined by the 25° West and 74° West meridians and the 60° South parallel.

This area is unique because its boundaries overlap with claims made by Chile and the United Kingdom. None of these competing claims have widespread international recognition. Currently, the region is subject to the rules of the Antarctic Treaty. This treaty manages how nations interact on the icy continent.

The physical environment of this region is defined by extreme cold and massive ice formations. The surface is largely covered by glaciers. These glaciers have an average thickness of 2 kilometres.

The temperature fluctuates significantly depending on the season. During the summer, temperatures typically hover around 0 °C (32 °F). In the winter, the temperature drops to a range of −60 °C (−76 °F). In extreme cases, temperatures may fall as low as −82 °C (−115 °F). Occasionally, the weather can warm up to 18 °C (65 °F). The region uses the UTC-3 time zone, which is the same as in Argentina.

Argentina's presence in Antarctica has a long and complex history. Exploration began in the early 20th century. In 1902, José María Sobral became the first Argentine to set foot on the continent. He joined the Swedish Antarctic Expedition led by Otto Nordenskiöld. This expedition faced difficulties when their ship collapsed. The Argentine Navy responded by sending the corvette ARA Uruguay to rescue the crew.

In 1904, Argentina established the Orcadas Base on Laurie Island. This base began as a weather station managed by William Speirs Bruce.

Today, Orcadas Base is the oldest permanent human settlement in Antarctica. This event is celebrated annually as the Day of the Argentine Antarctic.

The legal formulation of the Argentine claim happened in several stages. In 1939, Argentina created the National Commission of the Antarctic to increase research. By 1940, this became a permanent body. In 1941, the government published a map showing the Antarctic Sector it intended to claim. This claim was later expanded in 1946 to include the area between 25° and 74° West longitude. The official claim for the mainland was finally declared in 1957. During this time, there were several diplomatic disputes with Chile and the United Kingdom. In 1952, a conflict occurred at Hope Bay involving Argentine and British teams.

Administratively, Argentine Antarctica is organized as a department of the Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and South Atlantic Islands province. The provincial authorities operate out of Ushuaia.

The region contains six permanent stations and seven summer stations. According to the 2010 census, there were 230 inhabitants living at the permanent bases. These included 75 people at Marambio and 66 at Esperanza.

Life in these stations requires specialized equipment and logistics. The icebreaker ARA Almirante Irizar serves as a primary supply line for the bases.

The bases serve as hubs for scientific study and human habitation. Some stations, like Esperanza Base, even host families and schools. This creates a unique social environment in an otherwise desolate landscape.

The study of Argentine Antarctica connects geography, history, and international law. It shows how nations establish presence through scientific research and permanent settlements. The overlapping claims demonstrate the complexity of governing a continent without a single sovereign owner. The history of the Orcadas Base illustrates how early maritime rescue efforts led to long-term scientific cooperation. Today, the region remains a vital site for understanding the Earth's climate and polar systems.
