During this time, all the lugworms release their ova and sperms into the water. The ova are then fertilized in the water above the sand. The resulting eggs are enclosed in large, tongue-shaped masses of jelly. These jelly masses are about 8 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 1 inch thick. Each mass is anchored at one end to stay in place.
After hatching, the larvae follow a specific growth cycle. The tiny larvae hatch from the jelly and feed on the jelly itself. As they grow, they eventually develop a dozen segments. At this stage, they begin to resemble their adult parents. The young worms then burrow into the sand to begin their own lives. They usually start in sand that is higher up the beach than the adults. As the worms grow older, they gradually move down the beach.

Lugworms have also appeared in various forms of human culture. The writer William Butler Yeats included a singing lugworm in his work, "The Man Who Dreamed of Faeryland." In more recent times, the cartoonist Piers Baker created a comic strip called "Ollie and Quentin." This strip features a seagull named Ollie and a lugworm named Quentin. The strip began in the UK in 2002. It was introduced to international syndication by King Features Syndicate in early 2008. Baker created the characters as an homage to the worms he used for bait while fishing in his youth.
