Aramaic is a Northwest Semitic language with a history spanning over 3,000 years. It originated in the ancient region of Syria and spread across much of the Near East. This expansion reached Mesopotamia, the southern Levant, Sinai, and southeastern Anatolia. It also moved into the Caucasus and Eastern Arabia. Because it was so widespread, Aramaic became a vital tool for communication. It served as a language of public life and administration for several massive ancient empires. These included the Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, and Achaemenid Empires.
The mechanics of Aramaic involve a complex system of dialects and writing styles. Scholars often distinguish between different historical periods using specific terms. They might refer to "Old Aramaic" or "Imperial Aramaic" to denote certain eras. The language is also categorized by its regional varieties. Some researchers use the term "variety" to include both spoken vernaculars and formal written traditions. This distinction is important because a single word might mean different things depending on the time or place. For example, using the term "Modern Syriac" can be misleading. This is because modern spoken languages do not always descend directly from the classical Syriac language. To understand a phrase, one must specify the exact period, region, or culture intended.
Aramaic is part of the Northwest Semitic language family. This group includes several other languages that are mutually intelligible, such as Hebrew, Phoenician, and Moabite. It also includes languages like Edomite, Ekronite, Sutean, Amorite, and Ugaritic.
The history of Aramaic is marked by its rise to power and its early written records. The earliest Aramaic inscriptions date back to the 11th century BC. This makes it one of the oldest written languages in human history.
Identifying Aramaic in the past required significant scholarly work. For a long time, many inscriptions were simply labeled as Phoenician. In 1821, scholar Ulrich Friedrich Kopp argued that Arameans also had a rich writing tradition. He pointed to the Carpentras Stele as evidence. Kopp noted that words on this stone matched Aramaic found in the books of Daniel and Ruth.
Today, Aramaic continues to exist in several distinct forms. Modern varieties are still spoken by different groups, such as Assyrians, Mandeans, and Mizrahi Jews. In the towns of Maaloula, Bakh'a, and Jubb'adin in Syria, people still speak Western Aramaic.
Despite this long history, Aramaic is now considered an endangered language. Many of the remaining varieties are spoken primarily by older generations.
