To survive on land, arachnids have developed advanced respiratory and excretory systems. They use internal surfaces for breathing, such as tracheae or book lungs. Book lungs consist of a series of vascular plates used for gas exchange. To conserve water, they often have a waxy layer on their outer skin, or cuticle. They also use specialized glands to remove waste. These include coxal glands located along the side of the prosoma. They may also use Malpighian tubules, which empty waste into the gut. Their primary nitrogenous waste product is a substance called guanine.

Sensory perception is vital for hunting and avoiding danger. Arachnids possess two types of eyes called ocelli. These include lateral ocelli on the sides and median ocelli in the center. Most arachnids have a limited number of these eyes. They also rely heavily on fine sensory hairs that cover their bodies. Some species have highly complex hairs known as trichobothria.
