They like to eat grass and plants. They can go weeks without water. They can even smell rain from far away!

In the hot sun, they rest under trees. They stay still to save water. This helps them live in the heat.

These animals almost disappeared from the wild. People helped save them in zoos. Now, they live in the wild again.

These animals live in dry deserts. They eat many things like grass, fruit, and roots. They can go for weeks without water. They can even smell rain from far away. Then, they move to find new plants.

To stay cool, the oryx has special ways to live. In summer, it stays very still under trees. This helps it save water. It also has a part in its head called the rete mirabile. This is a network of small blood vessels. It helps cool the blood going to the brain.

These animals almost vanished from the wild. People saved them in zoos. They started putting them back in nature in 1980. Today, about 1,220 live in the wild.

It is easily recognized by its bright, luminous white coat. The underside of its body and its legs are brown. You can also see black stripes on its face and neck. These stripes go from the horns across the eyes to the mouth. Both males and females have long, straight, or slightly curved horns. These horns are ringed and can be quite sharp.

Living in the desert is a very hard job. The oryx lives in dry areas like the Arabian Peninsula. To survive, it uses special ways to stay cool. During the hot summer, it stays very still under shade trees. This helps the animal save its body water. It also has a network of small blood vessels in its head called the rete mirabile. This helps cool the blood before it reaches the brain. By doing this, the oryx can go many weeks without drinking water.

These animals almost disappeared from the wild completely. By the early 1970s, they were extinct in their natural homes. This happened because people hunted them with rifles and many vehicles. Luckily, groups like the Phoenix Zoo helped save them. They started a group called "Operation Oryx" in 1962. They kept the animals in zoos to help them grow in number. In 1980, people began releasing them back into the wild.

Scientists have studied the oryx for a long time. Peter Simon Pallas first described the species in 1767. Later, in 1857, the Zoological Society of London got the first living one in Europe. By 2016, there were about 1,220 oryx living in the wild. There were also 6,000 to 7,000 living in zoos and reserves. The oryx is now considered a vulnerable animal. This means it is no longer in immediate danger of disappearing forever.

The oryx is a very important symbol in many places. It is the national animal for Jordan, Oman, and Qatar. It is also the national animal for the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Some people think the oryx is linked to the myth of the unicorn. This is because an oryx might look like it has one horn from certain angles. If an oryx loses one horn, it cannot grow it back. This might be why old stories spoke of one-horned creatures.

The Arabian oryx, also known as the white oryx, is a medium-sized antelope. It belongs to the bovid family, which includes animals like sheep and cattle. This species is the smallest member of the Oryx genus. It is native to the desert and steppe regions of the Arabian Peninsula. The oryx is a vital part of its ecosystem and holds great cultural importance. It serves as the national animal for several countries, including Jordan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar.

Physically, the Arabian oryx is quite striking. Its coat is an almost luminous white color. The undersides of its body and its legs are brown. Distinct black stripes appear where the head meets the neck. These stripes also appear on the forehead, the nose, and run from the horns across the eye to the mouth. Both males and females possess long, straight, or slightly curved horns. These horns are ringed and can be very sharp. The animal stands between 40 and 50 centimeters tall at the shoulder. It typically weighs between 15 and 25 kilograms.

To survive in harsh desert environments, the oryx uses complex physiological adaptations. During the hot summer months, it can drastically reduce its minimal fasting metabolic rate. This means it uses less energy to stay alive. The oryx will lie completely inactive under shade trees during the day. It ranges over smaller areas at night to find food. This behavior helps the animal conserve water. It also allows its body temperature to rise during the heat of the day. This reduces the need for evaporative cooling, which saves even more body water. At night, the cool air lowers its temperature back to normal.

A specialized network of blood vessels helps protect its brain from heat. This network is called the rete mirabile. It branches from the two carotid arteries that lead to the brain. This system allows for heat exchange between warm arterial blood and cooler blood in the sinus cavities. Because of these changes, the oryx can reduce its urine volume and faecal water loss by at least 50 percent. These adaptations allow the oryx to go for several weeks without drinking any water. It can detect rainfall from a distance and travels toward new plant growth. Its diet consists mainly of grasses, but it also eats buds, herbs, fruit, tubers, and roots.

The history of the Arabian oryx includes many scientific discoveries. Peter Simon Pallas first described the species in 1767. He identified its range as Arabia and perhaps Libya. In 1857, the Zoological Society of London obtained the first living individual in Europe. A scientist named John Edward Gray proposed the name Oryx beatrix after Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom. Later, in 1903, Oldfield Thomas gave the Arabian oryx its original scientific name. The animal has also inspired ancient myths. Some historians believe the myth of the unicorn may be based on the oryx. From certain angles, the animal might look like it has only one horn. Since its horns are made of hollow bone, they cannot be regrown if lost.

The Arabian oryx faced a severe threat of extinction in the 20th century. During the 1930s, people began hunting them using automobiles and rifles. Some hunts were very large and used as many as 300 vehicles. By the mid-20th century, the northern population was gone. The last oryx in the wild was reported in 1972. To save them, groups like the Phoenix Zoo started "Operation Oryx" in 1962. They created the first captive-breeding herd in any zoo. This project helped increase their numbers in captivity. Reintroduction into the wild began in 1980, starting with releases in Oman.

Conservation efforts have seen significant success. In 1986, the species was classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List. However, in 2011, it became the first animal to revert to vulnerable status. This change happened because the wild population grew. In 2016, estimates showed 1,220 individuals living in the wild. This included 850 mature individuals. There were also between 6,000 and 7,000 oryx in captivity worldwide. While many live in Saudi Arabia, they have been reintroduced to Oman, Israel, Syria, Jordan, the UAE, and Bahrain. The total reintroduced population is now estimated at around 1,000 individuals.
