Historians have studied these changes for a long time. A man named Antonio Garcia Maceira first described this revolution in 1876. Later, in 1974, a historian named Andrew Watson gave it its name.

Another writer, Ibn al-'Awwam, wrote about how to grow and harvest cotton. He even conducted experiments on grafting, which is joining parts of different plants together. 
There were several distinct types of improvements made to farming practices. One method was crop rotation, such as planting wheat or barley after a crop of flax. Another method was companion planting, where different plants like grapes and olives were grown together. Farmers also improved animal husbandry, which is the care and breeding of livestock. Archaeological evidence shows that sheep in southern Portugal grew larger during this period. This suggests that farmers were providing better care and nutrition to their animals. 
Historians have debated the exact details of this revolution for many years. Antonio Garcia Maceira first described these changes in 1876. Later, in 1974, the historian Andrew J. Watson coined the term "Arab Agricultural Revolution." Watson argued that a vast trade network allowed for the movement of crops across the Islamic world. He identified eighteen specific crops that were spread through these networks. These included citrus fruits from China, sorghum from Africa, and rice or sugar cane from India. 
Some historians initially expressed skepticism regarding Watson's specific claims. For example, Jeremy Johns argued that some of the plants Watson listed were not actually important in those regions at that time. However, more recent findings in archaeology and archaeobotany have supported the idea of a major revolution. Scientists can now look at ancient plant remains to prove that new species were indeed being grown. This evidence shows that the movement of plants was a real and significant event. 
The significance of this revolution extends to many different areas of human life. The ability to grow more food led to a "commercial revolution" in places like Egypt. This helped transform Egypt into a major center for trade in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. It also contributed to a "culinary revolution," which changed the types of food people ate. The scientific knowledge gained during this time was eventually transmitted to Europe after the 11th century. This helped improve farming techniques and crop varieties across the entire continent.
