You work with a teacher. They show you how to do things. You learn while you work.

Long ago, this was very common.

A baker might teach a young person. They would live in the same house. The teacher gave them food and a place to sleep.

This helped the worker learn a craft. Some people learned to make shoes. Others learned to bake bread. Some even learned to sew.

After many years, the worker is ready. They might get a new job. They might even start their own shop.

Learning this way helps people gain skills. It is a way to prepare for work.

Some training happens only at a job. Other training uses both a job and a school. This helps you learn the ideas and the practice.

This system is very old.

In the Middle Ages, young people lived with a master. The master gave them food and a place to sleep. In return, the apprentice helped with the work. Most apprentices were boys. But some girls learned to be bakers or tailors. In the kingdom of Dahomey, young soldiers also learned this way. They started by helping regular soldiers. After years of work, they became real soldiers.

Today, many people use apprenticeships. In Austria, many teens choose this path. They learn to be mechanics or cooks. In Canada, some workers get a Red Seal.

An apprenticeship is a special way to learn a job through practice.

Instead of just reading books, a person learns by doing the work. This is called on-the-job training. Often, an apprentice also does some study to learn the rules of their trade. This helps them become experts in a specific profession. Some apprenticeships even help people get a license to do their work. This is very important for jobs that have strict rules.

There are two main ways these training programs work.

Types of Apprenticeships.jpg
Types of Apprenticeships.jpg
The first way is called an independent apprenticeship. In this way, an employer manages everything without using a school. The apprentice learns directly from the person they work for. The second way is called a cooperative apprenticeship. This way uses both an employer and a school. The school provides a plan, or a curriculum, for the student to follow. This helps the student turn what they learn in class into real skills at work.

People have used this system for a very long time.

In ancient Egypt, there were even written contracts for apprentices in 18 B.C. During the Middle Ages in Europe, masters would hire young people to help them. The master would provide food and a place to live. In exchange, the apprentice provided labor to help the business. Most apprentices were boys, but some girls worked as bakers or tailors. In the kingdom of Dahomey, young people even learned to be soldiers this way. They started by helping regular soldiers before joining the army themselves.

Different countries have their own ways of doing this today.

In Austria, about 40 percent of teenagers choose this path after they finish school. They might study to become a car mechanic or a cook. In Australia, there were 475,000 apprentices in training by March 2012. In Canada, workers can earn a special mark called the Red Seal. This certification shows they have passed important exams. This mark can even be recognized across different provinces in the country.

Apprenticeships help connect what people learn to the real world.

Whether someone is learning to be a chef or a technician, they are gaining real experience. In the Czech Republic, students spend much of their time working in companies. This makes sure they are ready for a career once they finish. By working with experts, apprentices build the skills they need for the future. It is a way to turn learning into a lifelong way to help society.

An apprenticeship is a structured system for training new practitioners in a specific trade or profession.

This method combines on-the-job training with formal study to build professional competence. Most training occurs while working for an experienced employer. This employer helps the apprentice master their trade in exchange for labor. This labor is provided for an agreed period after the apprentice reaches measurable milestones. In many regulated occupations, completing an apprenticeship allows a person to gain a license to practice. This ensures that workers meet high standards of skill and safety.

There are two primary categories of apprenticeship: independent and cooperative.

Types of Apprenticeships.jpg

Independent apprenticeships are managed entirely by employers. These programs operate without the involvement of educational institutions. They are not connected to a formal educational curriculum. In contrast, cooperative apprenticeships involve both an employer and an educational institution. These programs are always associated with a specific curriculum. This allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical work. This cooperation helps students gain professional autonomy through structured learning.

Cooperative models vary based on who leads the governance. Some are led by educational institutions, while others are led by employers. In institution-led models, the training may follow a long or short cycle. For example, long-cycle programs may last three to four years and balance theory and practice equally. Short-cycle programs might last only two to three years. Employer-led governance often involves shorter placements. These placements might last from a few weeks to six months. In these cases, the work-based training might represent 30% to 40% of the total curriculum.

The history of apprenticeship reaches back to the classical world.

Medieval baker.jpg

In 18 B.C., early contracts for apprentices were recorded on papyri in Egypt. By the twelfth century, apprenticeship contracts appeared in Genoa, Europe. During the Late Middle Ages, craft guilds and town governments often supervised these systems. A master craftsman would hire young people as an inexpensive source of labor. In return, the master provided food, lodging, and formal training. Most apprentices were male, but women found roles as seamstresses, bakers, and stationers. Most apprentices started between ten and fifteen years of age.

Apprenticeship has also played a role in military structures. In the West African kingdom of Dahomey, the military adopted this system. Young recruits as young as seven or eight years old served as shield carriers. After years of apprenticeship and military experience, they could join as regular soldiers. This system helped create a cohesive and well-disciplined military force. In Europe, many apprentices hoped to become master craftsmen themselves. Their contracts often lasted between two and seven years or longer. In some places, like Coventry, completing a seven-year apprenticeship with stuff merchants allowed people to become freemen of the city.

Modern apprenticeship systems look very different depending on the country.

In Australia, apprenticeships cover all industry sectors for entry-level or mid-career training. As of March 31, 2012, there were 475,000 apprentices in training in Australia. The country uses Group Training Organisations to provide a safety net for businesses and workers. In Austria, about 40 percent of all teenagers enter apprenticeship training after compulsory education. This rate has remained stable since the 1950s. Popular trades in Austria include retail salespersons, clerks, and car mechanics. The training includes compulsory attendance at a part-time vocational school called a Berufsschule.

In Canada, apprenticeships are formalized for craft trades and technician-level qualifications.

Workers can earn the Canadian Inter-provincial 'Red Seal' certification. This is achieved by passing specific provincial and standard exams. This certification is significant because it is recognized across the country. In the Czech Republic, the system is governed by the Education Act. Students spend between 30% and 60% of their time working in companies. This balance of practical and formal education ensures they are prepared for their professions. These diverse systems all aim to connect learning with the demands of skilled labor.
