They stretch from the Island of Newfoundland in Canada down to Alabama in the United States. Because they cross through Canada and the U.S., they are in three different countries.

These mountains are very old. They began to form about 1.1 billion years ago. Long ago, two large pieces of land crashed into each other. This crash folded the rocks to make the first mountains.

At one time, these mountains were as tall as the Rockies. Over a long time, wind and water wore them down. This process is called erosion.

The range has many different parts. It has high peaks and wide valleys. The highest point is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina.

Many people visit the mountains to hike. There is a famous path called the Appalachian Trail. It runs from Maine all the way to Georgia.

This range sits in the eastern and northeastern parts of the continent. It stretches from the Island of Newfoundland in Canada all the way down to central Alabama in the United States. Because it passes through the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, it is technically in three different countries.

The United States calls this area the Appalachian Highlands. Canada uses the name Appalachian Uplands to describe its part of the region. Scientists use these names to map out the different landforms and shapes of the earth.

These mountains are very old and have a long story of change. The process of making them began about 1.1 billion years ago.

Long ago, two giant pieces of land called Laurentia and Amazonia crashed into each other. This crash created a supercontinent named Rodinia and folded the rocks into mountains.

Later, other geologic events shaped the surface we see today. At one time, these mountains were likely as tall as the Alps or the Rockies. Over the last 240 million years, natural erosion has worn the peaks down. This is why the mountains look different now than they did in the past.

The name "Appalachian" has a very interesting history. In 1528, a Spanish expedition led by Pánfilo de Narváez found a Native American village.

They wrote down a name that sounded like "Apalachee." This name was used for a tribe and a region near Florida. Later, Spanish mapmakers began to use the name for the mountains themselves. One of the first maps to show this was made by Diego Gutiérrez in 1562. Today, it is one of the oldest European place-names in the United States.

The range is filled with many different peaks and valleys.

There is no single line of highest mountains, but many summits are very high. Mount Mitchell in North Carolina is the highest peak in the whole range.

It is also the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. In West Virginia, there are more than 150 peaks that rise above 3,500 feet. Other high spots include Spruce Knob and Mount Davis. In Georgia, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the state.

Many people visit the Appalachians for fun and adventure.

The most famous way to see them is by hiking the Appalachian Trail. This path runs from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia. There is even an International Appalachian Trail that goes into Canada. The mountains can be a hard place to travel through. They form a barrier of ridges and valleys for many highways and railroads. This makes moving east and west a big job for travelers.

Because the range passes through the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, it is technically located in three different countries. The term "Appalachian" can refer to many different regions and mountain systems. Because of this complexity, different countries use specific scientific names for the area. The United States Geological Survey calls the region the Appalachian Highlands. The Geological Survey of Canada refers to it as the Appalachian Uplands.

The geological history of these mountains began approximately 1.1 billion years ago. The first mountains in this region formed when two continents, Laurentia and Amazonia, collided. This massive collision helped create a supercontinent known as Rodinia. This event caused rocks to fold and fault, creating the earliest mountain structures.

About 480 million years ago, a series of three distinct orogenic eras began. An orogeny is a period of mountain building caused by tectonic activity. During these eras, the mountains grew to heights similar to the modern Alps or the Rocky Mountains. However, natural erosion has been wearing them down for the last 240 million years. This constant wearing away has shaped the landscape into the mountains we see now.

The range is composed of several distinct provinces and subranges.

The Appalachian belt includes plateaus that slope toward the Atlantic Ocean in New England. It also includes the Allegheny and Cumberland plateaus to the northwest. One notable feature is the Great Appalachian Valley, which is a long chain of broad valleys. In the southern sections, this valley divides the mountain system into two unequal parts. In the north, it sits west of the typical Appalachian ranges and separates them from the Adirondack group. Some areas, like the dissected plateau in Kentucky and West Virginia, are very rugged. Although these ridges are not extremely high, the terrain remains very difficult to navigate.

The name "Appalachian" has deep historical roots in the Americas. In 1528, the Narváez expedition explored the northern coast of Florida. They found a Native American village and transcribed its name as "Apalachee."

This name was used by the Spanish for a local tribe and a northern region. Eventually, Spanish cartographers began applying the name to the mountains themselves. The first map to show a variation of this name was created by Diego Gutiérrez in 1562. The first map to use the name specifically for the mountain range was made by Jacques le Moyne de Morgues in 1655. Today, it stands as the fourth-oldest surviving European place-name in the United States.

There is no single axis of highest peaks, but many summits reach significant elevations. Mount Mitchell in North Carolina is the highest peak in the entire range.

It is also the highest point in the United States located east of the Mississippi River. In West Virginia, more than 150 peaks rise above 3,500 feet, including Spruce Knob. In Pennsylvania, over sixty summits rise above 3,000 feet. The Blue Ridge Mountains are another major part of the system. These rise in southern Pennsylvania and reach high elevations in Virginia.
