How this zone works depends on the water and the sun. Light can travel deep in clear, tropical water. In these places, the aphotic zone starts at a greater depth. Near the poles, the sun hits at an angle. This means light does not go as deep there. The zone can also be shallower if the water is turbid. Turbid water has floating material that blocks the light. 
Scientists divide the aphotic zone into several different parts. The first part is the mesopelagic zone, also called the twilight zone. This area has enough light for predators to see. It goes from 200 to 1,000 meters deep. Below that is the bathyal zone, which goes from 1,000 to 4,000 meters. Then comes the abyssal zone, which reaches 4,000 to 6,000 meters. The deepest part is the hadal zone. This area is deeper than the abyssal zone.

Many animals move between the light and the dark. This is called a nightly vertical migration. At night, millions of tiny creatures swim up to the surface. Life in the aphotic zone must adapt to a world without sunlight. Because photosynthesis cannot occur, most food comes from dead organisms sinking from the waters above. However, some life forms do not rely on sunlight at all. Benthic communities near methane seeps use methane-oxidizing microorganisms to supply energy. In rare cases, certain bacteria use chemical energy from sources like sulfides and methane. 
Many animals in this zone use bioluminescence to survive. Bioluminescence is the ability of a living creature to produce its own light. Animals use this light for navigation or to lure prey into their jaws. The anglerfish is a famous example of this behavior. It has a unique appendage on its head that acts as a light lure. This lure provides navigation and serves as bait for smaller animals. Other unique creatures found here include the giant squid, the vampire squid, and the gulper eel.
Some animals are capable of traveling between the different zones. The sperm whale and the southern elephant seal occasionally hunt in the aphotic zone. These animals can handle the intense water pressure without dying. 
The scale of the aphotic zone is truly massive. The majority of the ocean is aphotic. The average depth of the sea is quite deep, and the deepest part is the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. This specific location reaches a depth of about 11,000 meters.
