Lavoisier is most famous for discovering the role of oxygen in combustion. Combustion is the process of burning. Before his discovery, many scientists believed in the phlogiston theory. This theory suggested that a substance called phlogiston was released during burning. Lavoisier proved this was incorrect through careful experimentation. He showed that oxygen is actually what reacts with a substance during combustion. He named oxygen in 1778 and identified it as an element. An element is a basic substance that cannot be broken down into simpler parts. In 1783, he also recognized hydrogen as an element. 
One of his most important scientific achievements was the law of conservation of mass. Lavoisier used precise tools to observe matter in a closed system. A closed system is an environment where nothing can enter or leave. He discovered that while matter may change its form or shape, its mass always remains the same. This means if you burn something in a sealed container, the total weight does not change. This principle led to the creation of balanced chemical equations. These equations are the mathematical descriptions of reactions that scientists still use today. 
Lavoisier's scientific career was supported by his work in finance and his marriage. He was a member of the Ferme générale, a company that collected taxes for the French government. This role provided the wealth necessary to fund his expensive scientific research. He built a sophisticated laboratory so other scientists could study without needing their own funding. His wife, Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier, was a vital partner in his work. 

Beyond the laboratory, Lavoisier worked as a social reformer. He wanted to use science to improve the lives of people in France. In 1765, he wrote about improving urban street lighting. In 1768, he worked on designs to bring clean drinking water to Paris. He also studied air quality and the health risks of gunpowder. He even investigated how to improve ventilation in hospitals. Lavoisier also looked into the hygiene of prisons to suggest better living conditions. He believed that science should serve the public good. 
Lavoisier's life ended during a period of great political change. The French Revolution brought intense conflict to France. Because of his role in the Ferme générale, Lavoisier was charged with tax fraud. He was also accused of selling adulterated tobacco. Adulterated tobacco is tobacco that has had substances like ash or water added to it. Lavoisier had actually created a system to stop this practice. He used chemical tests to detect ash and implemented strict rules for water content. Despite his scientific contributions, he was guillotined in 1794. A year and a half later, the French government exonerated him, meaning they declared him innocent. 
His legacy remains a foundation of modern science. He helped write the first extensive list of elements. In this list, he even predicted that the element silicon would exist. He also helped reform chemical nomenclature, which is the system of naming chemicals. This made scientific communication much clearer for everyone. By combining math, measurement, and observation, Lavoisier moved science into a new era. His methods turned chemistry into the organized, precise discipline we know today.
