This area was targeted by bombings intended to intimidate Black residents. Her mother, Sallye Bell Davis, was a leader in the Southern Negro Youth Congress. Her academic journey took her to several major universities. She received a scholarship to Brandeis University in Massachusetts. There, she became a student of the philosopher Herbert Marcuse. Marcuse taught her that one could be an academic and an activist. Davis also studied in France at the Sorbonne. She later moved to West Germany to study at the University of Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, she lived in a loft and participated in radical student actions. She eventually moved to the University of California, San Diego.

In 1969, Davis began working as an assistant professor at UCLA. She was a member of the Communist Party USA and the Black Panther Party. The UCLA Board of Regents fired her because of her Communist Party membership. A judge eventually ruled that this firing was illegal. However, the university fired her again in 1970. They cited her use of "inflammatory language" in her speeches. This included her descriptions of the police and university leaders.

Davis faced a very serious legal crisis in 1970. During an armed takeover of a courtroom in Marin County, California, guns belonging to Davis were used. This event resulted in the deaths of four people.
