In his early career, Sakharov worked on nuclear physics. He helped design a way to make much stronger bombs. One of his early ideas was called the "layer cake." Sakharov's scientific career began with deep studies into the nature of matter. After graduating from Moscow State University, he joined the Theoretical Department of the Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1945. In 1947, he successfully defended his thesis on nuclear transmutation, which is the process of changing one chemical element into another. He eventually moved into the Soviet atomic bomb project under the direction of Igor Kurchatov and Igor Tamm. During this time, he developed several important concepts for nuclear energy and weaponry. His work transitioned from studying cosmic rays to designing complex fusion reactions.

One of Sakharov's early designs for a thermonuclear device was called the "sloika," or "layer cake." This design involved adding a shell of natural, unenriched uranium around deuterium. The natural uranium would capture neutrons and undergo fission, which increased the overall yield of the device. However, this "layer cake" method of alternating fission and fusion fuel did not produce the massive results scientists hoped for. Sakharov eventually moved toward a more advanced concept known as radiation implosion. This process used soft X-rays emitted by a fission bomb to focus onto a cylinder of lithium deuteride. This intense radiation would compress the fuel symmetrically, allowing for a much more powerful thermonuclear reaction.

This research led to the development of the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated: the Tsar Bomba. Tested in October 1961, the Tsar Bomba had a yield of 50 megatons.

While Sakharov was a key figure in this development, he later became deeply concerned about the moral implications of his work. He began to advocate for the peaceful use of nuclear technology. In 1950, he proposed the concept of a tokamak. A tokamak is a device designed to confine extremely hot, ionized plasma using torus-shaped magnetic fields. This technology is a fundamental part of research into controlled nuclear fusion for energy.

After 1965, Sakharov shifted his focus toward fundamental physics and physical cosmology. He investigated the very early history of the universe and the behavior of subatomic particles. He was the first to provide a theoretical reason for proton decay, which is the idea that protons might eventually break apart. Sakharov also explored the baryon asymmetry of the universe, which explains why there is more matter than antimatter. His work in this field established several important scientific principles. These include baryon number violation, C-symmetry violation, and CP-symmetry violation. These concepts help scientists understand why the universe contains the physical matter we see today.

Sakharov also proposed fascinating models regarding the shape and life cycle of the universe. He considered cyclic models, where the universe oscillates between phases of expansion and contraction. In these models, Sakharov theorized that the universe might have a "reversal of the time arrow." He imagined a scenario where a universe existed before the Big Bang that acted as a CPT reflection of our own. This hypothesis involved the idea of a "Friedman singularity" at time zero. He even suggested that these two eras might connect through a bridge of matter, providing a way to understand the transition from a contracting universe to an expanding one.

As his scientific interests grew toward the cosmic, his political activism grew toward the social. Sakharov became a dissident, a person who openly opposes an established government. He campaigned against nuclear proliferation and helped push for the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty. He also used his position in the scientific community to defend the integrity of science. In 1964, he publicly opposed the nomination of a scientist who had been linked to the unfair treatment of other researchers. This activism brought him into direct conflict with the Soviet establishment, leading to significant persecution. Despite this, he remained a dedicated voice for human rights until his death in 1989.

Today, Sakharov's influence is felt in both the laboratory and the halls of government. The European Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize annually to honor individuals and organizations dedicated to human rights.
