For extreme circumstances, sailors use tandem anchoring, also known as backing an anchor. This places two anchors in a line on the same rode to develop great holding power.
Beyond staying in one place, anchors can assist in ship movement. A kedge anchor is a lighter anchor used for specific tasks. It is often carried in addition to the main bower anchor. Sailors use kedge anchors to limit a vessel's turning circle in narrow rivers. They can also be used to recover vessels that have run aground. Historically, sailing warships used kedge anchors to outmaneuver opponents when the wind died down. There is also an archaic technique called club hauling. This was used in narrow channels when there was no room to tack. An anchor was dropped to pivot the vessel onto a new tack.
