The An Lushan rebellion was a massive civil war in China. It lasted from 755 to 763. This war happened during the middle of the Tang dynasty.

The conflict started because a general wanted to overthrow the Tang government. He tried to start a new group called the Yan dynasty. This war changed the course of Chinese history forever. It made the Tang dynasty much weaker for a long time.

The war moved through many different stages and leaders. It began when An Lushan moved his army from Fanyang on 16 December 755. He quickly captured the city of Luoyang in early 756. After that, his rebel forces took the great capital of Chang'an. The Tang emperor, Xuanzong, had to flee to the mountains of Sichuan.

Many different people led the rebel Yan dynasty over the years. An Lushan led the fight for two years before his own son killed him.

After that, a man named Shi Siming took over the leadership. He was a close ally of An Lushan. Later, Shi Siming was also killed by his son, Shi Chaoyi. The Yan dynasty finally fell to the Tang forces in February 763.

There were many important numbers and places during this time. The capital city of Chang'an was huge and full of life. It had between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people living inside its walls.

An Lushan was a very powerful general with many soldiers. He controlled three large areas in the north with 164,000 troops. He was even a favorite of the emperor and lived in a fancy house.

It caused widespread destruction and changed how the country was ruled for centuries. The fighting significantly weakened the Tang dynasty's power and authority.

The rebellion was driven by An Lushan, a powerful general. He was a jiedushi, which is a military governor of a specific region. An Lushan had a background of mixed Sogdian and Göktürk ancestry. He became a favorite of Emperor Xuanzong. The emperor even built him a luxurious house in the capital, Chang'an.

An Lushan was appointed to lead three northern garrisons. This gave him control over 164,000 soldiers. He used his influence and the chaos of natural disasters to start his revolt.

The war moved through several intense stages. On 16 December 755, An Lushan marched his army from Fanyang.

His forces moved quickly along the Grand Canal. They captured the city of Luoyang in January 756. An Lushan then declared himself the emperor of the Yan dynasty. The rebels also captured the western capital of Chang'an in July 756. This city was a massive metropolis. It held between 800,000 and 1,000,000 people within its walls.

Leadership of the Yan dynasty changed through violence. An Lushan led the rebellion for two years. Then, his son An Qingxu assassinated him. After that, Shi Siming took control of the rebels. Shi Siming was a close ally of An Lushan. Two years later, Shi Siming was killed by his own son, Shi Chaoyi. Shi Chaoyi ruled for two more years. The Yan dynasty finally collapsed on 17 February 763.

The Tang emperors faced great challenges during this time. The rebellion spanned the reigns of three emperors: Xuanzong, Suzong, and Daizong. When the rebels approached the capital, Emperor Xuanzong fled toward Sichuan.

This journey through the Qin Mountains was very difficult. During the flight, an incident occurred at Mawei Inn. Angry soldiers demanded the deaths of Yang Guozhong and the emperor's favorite, Yang Guifei.

The emperor was forced to agree to the soldiers' demands. Later, the crown prince Li Heng became emperor to lead the resistance.

The consequences of the war were devastating for the population. Famine and displacement caused many people to die. Large-scale destruction of infrastructure also occurred. The Tang dynasty lost control of the Western Regions. The economic heart of China began to shift. It moved away from the Guanzhong region toward the Jiangnan region.

This shift changed the political and economic map of China.

The rebellion also changed how China was governed. Even though the Tang won, they did not change the military structure. This led to many regional warlords seeking independence. This secessionism continued for decades. It lasted into the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The following Song dynasty even grew to distrust military commanders because of this history. The memory of the An Lushan rebellion shaped Chinese politics for a very long time.
