While altostratus clouds themselves typically only produce light sprinkles or small showers, they can have thunderstorms embedded within them. If the cloud base continues to lower and the rainfall becomes consistent, the altostratus transitions into a nimbostratus cloud.
Altostratus clouds also have a unique impact on the global climate. They reflect approximately 50 watts per square meter of short-wave solar radiation back into space, which cools the Earth. However, they also reflect about 30 watts per square meter of long-wave infrared radiation back to the surface. This is known as the greenhouse effect.
Finally, the ice crystals within these clouds can create beautiful optical phenomena. When sunlight or moonlight is reflected and refracted through these crystals, it can create bright halos. These halos may look like rings, arcs, or multicolored spots.
