These clouds form in a specific way. A large mass of warm air rises up. This causes water vapor to condense onto small dust particles. These tiny particles are called nuclei. This process creates water droplets and ice crystals.

Most altostratus clouds are made of ice crystals. Some also contain water droplets. Sometimes they have a "melt layer" inside. This is where ice crystals melt into water droplets. These liquid droplets are shaped like spheres. Because they are spheres, they fall faster than ice crystals. This causes them to collect at the bottom of the cloud.

Scientists have identified five different varieties of these clouds. The first is altostratus duplicatus, which has two or more layers. Next is the translucidus variety, which lets the sun or moon shine through. The opacus variety is much thicker and opaque. There is also the radiatus variety, which has parallel bands stretching toward the horizon. Finally, the undulatus variety looks wavy. It seems to rise and fall at the base. These varieties help us understand how the clouds look from different angles.

Altostratus clouds tell us about the weather. They often arrive ahead of a warm front. This is when warm air moves into an area. When these clouds appear, rain or snow may follow in 12 to 24 hours.

The clouds themselves usually only make light sprinkles or small showers. They do not usually produce heavy rain. However, thunderstorms can sometimes be hidden inside them. If the clouds get thicker and lower, they become nimbostratus clouds. This change often brings more steady precipitation.

These clouds also affect how much heat the Earth keeps. They reflect about 50 watts of solar radiation back into space. This helps cool the Earth. At the same time, they trap about 30 watts of heat near the surface. This is called the greenhouse effect.

Altostratus often form at the leading edge of a warm front. In these cases, high-level cirrostratus clouds thicken and lower until they become altostratus. They can also form when nimbostratus clouds thin out. Additionally, the spreading middle column or upper anvil of a thunderstorm can produce altostratus clouds.

Altostratus clouds are composed of various microphysical components. While they can contain liquid water droplets and supercooled droplets, ice crystals make up the vast majority of the cloud.

Inside a mixed-phase cloud, a "melt layer" may exist. This is a region where ice crystals melt into liquid water droplets. These droplets are shaped like spheres, which allows them to fall much faster than ice crystals. Consequently, these water droplets tend to collect at the bottom of the cloud. The temperature inside the cloud follows a consistent lapse rate. This means the temperature decreases by 5 to 7 °C per kilometer as altitude increases.

Because they often lack distinct features, altostratus are not subdivided into species. However, scientists recognize five specific varieties based on their appearance. The *altostratus duplicatus* is a rare form consisting of two or more cloud layers. The *translucidus* variety is translucent, allowing the sun or moon to be seen through it.

In contrast, the *opacus* variety is completely opaque. The *radiatus* variety features parallel bands that stretch toward the horizon. Finally, the *undulatus* variety has a wavy appearance where the base seems to rise and fall.

These clouds are vital tools for weather forecasting. Altostratus clouds usually herald the arrival of warm fronts or occluded fronts. An occluded front occurs when a faster-moving cold front catches up to a warm front. When these clouds appear, continuous rain or snow often follows within 12 to 24 hours. While altostratus clouds themselves typically only produce light sprinkles or small showers, they can have thunderstorms embedded within them. If the cloud base continues to lower and the rainfall becomes consistent, the altostratus transitions into a nimbostratus cloud.

Altostratus clouds also have a unique impact on the global climate. They reflect approximately 50 watts per square meter of short-wave solar radiation back into space, which cools the Earth. However, they also reflect about 30 watts per square meter of long-wave infrared radiation back to the surface. This is known as the greenhouse effect.

This process heats the Earth. Altostratus is one of only two cloud genera, the other being cirrus, that exhibit a net global heating effect. While cirrus clouds are four times more potent, altostratus provides a net heating effect of 0.5 watts per square meter.

Finally, the ice crystals within these clouds can create beautiful optical phenomena. When sunlight or moonlight is reflected and refracted through these crystals, it can create bright halos. These halos may look like rings, arcs, or multicolored spots.

Unlike halos, which are best seen from the air, altostratus can also produce coronas and iridescence that are visible from the ground. A corona appears as small, concentric, pastel-colored rings around the sun or moon. Iridescence can appear as bright, often parallel bands of color projected across the cloud. These visual effects provide a direct way to observe the microscopic crystals working within the clouds.
