The republic sits at a major junction of different environments. It meets the Siberian taiga, the Kazakh steppes, and the Mongolian semi-deserts. To the north lies Kemerovo Oblast. To the northeast is Khakassia. To the east is the Tuva Republic. To the west is Altai Krai. It also shares international borders with three nations. These are Mongolia to the southeast, China to the south, and Kazakhstan to the southwest.

The geography of the region is defined by the Altai Mountains. This mountain system covers much of the republic. It also stretches into neighboring Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The terrain features high, rugged ridges and deep river valleys. These shapes are caused by periodic seismic activity, which means frequent earthquakes.

The Qing Empire also held power here until 1864. In 1864 and 1865, the Altan Nuur Uriankhai became part of the Russian Empire via the Treaty of Tarbagatai.

Political changes continued through the 20th century. In 1918, the Confederated Republic of Altai was briefly established. It aimed to rebuild the Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan. However, it remained neutral during the Russian Civil War. It was annexed back into Russia in 1920. A second Altai Republic existed from 1921 to 1922. After that, the region went through several name changes. It was known as the Oyrot Autonomous Oblast and later the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Oblast. In 1992, it finally became the Altai Republic.
