Long ago, people lived in the desert.

They made a new city. It was called Marrakesh. They also ruled far lands. This helped many people live together. They even used gold coins.
Their empire was very large. It stretched across many lands. They were very good at battle. This helped them grow even more. It was a very big change for the world.
Long ago, many Berber tribes lived in the desert. These tribes were called the Sanhaja. They moved across lands near the Senegal and Niger rivers.

The Almoravids grew very strong. They took control of important trade cities. They captured Sijilmasa and Awdaghust around 1054. This helped them rule the desert trade routes. They even built a new capital city called Marrakesh.
Their empire grew even larger. It stretched across North Africa and into al-Andalus. Al-Andalus is a part of Spain. In 1086, they won a big battle at Sagrajas. This victory helped them hold their land for a long time. They used gold coins to trade.
The Almoravid dynasty was a powerful group of Berber people. They built a huge empire in North Africa and parts of Europe. Their rule began in the 1050s and lasted until 1147. This group was the first major Berber-led Islamic empire in the western Mediterranean. They changed how people lived in the desert and near the sea. They helped spread Islam across the Sahara region.
The Almoravids grew from a group of nomadic tribes. These tribes included the Lamtuna, Gudala, and Massufa. They lived in the desert between the Senegal and Niger rivers. A teacher named Abdallah ibn Yasin helped unite these people. He taught them strict religious laws. Some say the name Almoravid means "one who is ready for battle." Others say it comes from a place called a ribat. A ribat is like a monastery-fortress for soldiers.
Expansion was a big part of their history. In the early 1050s, they began taking over important lands. They captured the cities of Sijilmasa and Awdaghust around 1054 or 1055. These cities were vital for desert trade routes. The Almoravids also founded the city of Marrakesh. They made Marrakesh their capital city. This helped them manage their growing lands in the Maghreb.
The empire eventually reached al-Andalus, which is part of modern Spain. The Almoravids were very important in this region. They helped stop Christian kingdoms from moving further into Muslim lands. One of their biggest wins was the Battle of Sagrajas in 1086. This victory united North Africa and al-Andalus under one rule. Their leaders were called "Princes of the Muslims." They did not claim to be caliphs themselves.
All empires eventually face changes. The Almoravid power began to fade after 1118. They lost the city of Zaragoza during this time. A new group called the Almohads started a rebellion in the 1120s. This rebellion was led by a man named Ibn Tumart. The Almoravid rule finally ended in 1147. The Almohads captured Marrakesh and became the new leaders.
The Almoravid dynasty was a powerful Berber Muslim empire. It ruled large parts of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. This empire existed from the 1050s until 1147. The Almoravids were the first major Berber-led Islamic empire in the western Mediterranean. Their rule changed the history of the Maghreb and al-Andalus.
The name "Almoravid" likely comes from the Arabic word for a person who is ready for battle. It is also linked to the term ribat. A ribat is a monastery-fortress used for religious study and defense. Some sources suggest the name comes from a school called Dar al-Murabitin. This school was founded by a scholar named Waggag ibn Zallu. His student, Abdallah ibn Yasin, later became a key religious leader for the movement.
The movement began with nomadic Berber tribes in the Sahara. These tribes included the Lamtuna, the Gudala, and the Massufa. They lived in the territory between the Senegal and Niger rivers. The Lamtuna were the main founding tribe of the empire. They were part of the Sanhaja group of people. These nomads had converted to Islam during the 9th century.
Religious teaching helped unite these different tribes. A chieftain named Yahya ibn Ibrahim sought better religious education for his people. He met a scholar named Abu Imran al-Fasi in Kairoa. Following a recommendation, Yahya went to study with Waggag ibn Zallu. He was assigned a teacher named Abdallah ibn Yasin. Ibn Yasin was a very strict teacher of Maliki law. He taught that people must strictly follow the Quran and Islamic law.
Ibn Yasin's teachings initially faced resistance from the Gudala people. They eventually expelled him after the death of Yahya ibn Ibrahim. However, the Lamtuna tribe gave him a warm welcome. Their leader, Yahya ibn Umar, invited him to preach to them. This created a strong partnership between the religious teachers and the tribal leaders. They began to call themselves the al-Murabitin. This group worked to replace tribal loyalties with a single Islamic identity.
The Almoravids began a massive expansion in the early 1050s. They targeted strategic cities to control desert trade routes. They captured Sijilmasa in the north and Awdaghust in the south around 1054 or 1055. Some historical accounts say their army had 30,000 camel riders. During this expansion, they founded Marrakesh to serve as their capital. The empire eventually split into two branches. One branch stayed in the Maghreb under Yusuf ibn Tashfin. The other branch remained in the Sahara under Abu Bakr ibn Umar.
The empire grew even larger when they entered al-Andalus. This region is the Muslim territory in the Iberian Peninsula. They helped stop the advance of Christian kingdoms in that area. A major victory occurred at the Battle of Sagrajas in 1086. This event united the Maghreb and al-Andalus under one political rule. The Almoravid leaders did not call themselves caliphs. Instead, they used the title Amir al-Muslimīn, meaning "Prince of the Muslims." They still recognized the Abbasid Caliphs in Baghdad as their superiors.
Almoravid power began to decline after 1118. They lost control of the city of Zaragoza during this time. A new group called the Almohads started a rebellion in the 1120s. This rebellion was led by a man named Ibn Tumart. The Almohads were led by the Masmuda people. In 1147, the Almohads captured the capital of Marrakesh. The last Almoravid ruler, Ishaq ibn Ali, was killed during this conquest. The Almohads then became the new dominant power in North Africa and al-Andalus.
