Ustad Allauddin Khan was a monumental figure in 20th-century Indian classical music.
Khan's musical education was a diverse and long process. He was born into a Bengali Muslim family in Shibpur village, British India. His first teacher was his elder brother, Fakir Aftabuddin Khan. At age ten, he joined a jatra party, which is a type of folk theater. This experience exposed him to many folk genres like jari, sari, and baul. Later, he studied sargam, a system of musical notes, for twelve years under Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya. He eventually became a multi-instrumentalist by studying with many different experts.
He mastered a wide variety of both indigenous and foreign instruments. From Amritalal Dutt, he learned the sitar, flute, piccolo, mandolin, and banjo. He studied the sanai, naquara, tiquara, and jagajhampa from Hazari Ustad. He also learned percussion instruments like the pakhawaj, mridang, and tabla from Nandababu. This broad knowledge allowed him to understand music from many different perspectives. Such versatility is rare even among highly skilled professional musicians.
Khan's career is closely tied to the town of Maihar. Before he was a famous court musician, he arrived in Maihar with no money. A man named Suraj Sahai Saxena gave him shelter for about two years. During this time, Khan practiced the shehnai, a reed instrument, outside a temple. He would accompany Saxena while the man climbed 552 steps to the Sharda Devi temple. This period of struggle eventually led to his official appointment by the Maharaja of Maihar.
As a court musician, Khan revolutionized the musical landscape of the region. In 1907, he established the Maihar Band to teach music to orphaned children. He used his position to develop the modern Maihar gharana style. He created new ragas, which are melodic frameworks used in Indian music. He also combined the bass sitar and bass sarod with traditional instruments. By setting up an orchestra, he brought a new scale to classical performances.
His professional life included significant international and national achievements. In 1935, he toured Europe with Uday Shankar's ballet troupe. In 1955, he established a dedicated college of music in Maihar. The Indian government recognized his massive contributions with several high honors. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for his lifetime of work. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1958 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1971.
Today, Khan's legacy is preserved through his students and his home. His students include legendary figures like Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee. His family also continued his musical tradition through his daughter, Annapurna Devi. His former residence in Maihar has been restored as a memorial. It now serves as part of a retreat for artists and writers. His life has even been the subject of several documentary films. These films help ensure that his history remains known to new generations.
