This offset allows the sight line to coincide exactly with the edge of the bar. This edge is known as the fiducial edge. Other versions use a slit or a circular hole without a wire. These openings might be as small as 2 mm in width to reduce sighting errors. If the object is dim, such as a star, a larger opening might be necessary.

Another method involves vanes without any openings at all. In this case, the user rotates the device until the two opposite vanes eclipse the object. This process of eclipsing can yield very precise measurements if done with skill. A more complex design was created by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius. His instrument featured a pivot point with a vertical cylinder and a vane. The vane had two narrow slits spaced exactly the same distance apart as the cylinder's diameter.

Hevelius used this unique design to catalog star positions with high accuracy. He chose to use naked-eye observations rather than telescopic sights. To align the tool, the observer moves the vane until the star is just barely visible on both sides of the cylinder. Because stars are so far away, they appear as a single point source. This allows the observer to see the star on both sides of the cylinder simultaneously. This method provided very precise results for his astronomical work.
