Ali ibn Abi Talib was a central figure in the early history of Islam. He was the cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad.
Ali was born in Mecca around 600 CE to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad. Some traditions suggest he may have been born inside the Ka'ba. This is the holiest site in Islam. When he was about five years old, he was raised in Muhammad's household. By age eleven, he was among the first to accept Muhammad's teachings.
During the migration to Medina in 622 CE, Ali played a dangerous role. He stayed behind in Mecca as a decoy to protect Muhammad. This act of bravery is linked to Quranic verses about sacrifice.
Ali's religious authority is a major point of discussion in Islamic history. In 632 CE, during the Hajj pilgrimage, Muhammad spoke at Ghadir Khumm. He famously declared, "Whoever I am his mawla, then Ali is his mawla." The Arabic word mawla is polysemous, meaning it has many meanings. Shia Muslims interpret this as Muhammad investing Ali with religious and political authority. Sunni Muslims often view it as a statement of friendship or rapport. This disagreement remains a core distinction between the two branches of Islam.
Ali was also a renowned warrior on the battlefield. He served as the standard-bearer in battles like Badr in 624 CE and Khaybar in 628 CE.
After Muhammad's death, the leadership of the community changed. A group met at the Saqifa and appointed Abu Bakr as the first caliph. Ali did not claim leadership during the reigns of Abu Bakr or Umar. However, he was often critical of the third caliph, Uthman, regarding issues of corruption. Following Uthman's assassination in 656 CE, Ali was elected caliph in Medina. His reign was marked by significant internal conflict and rebellions.
Ali faced several challenges to his authority during his caliphate. He fought the Battle of the Camel in 656 CE against forces led by Aisha.
Today, the legacy of Ali is preserved in many ways. His famous sayings are collected in the book Nahj al-balagha. For Shia Muslims, his shrine in Najaf, Iraq, is a major site for pilgrimage.
