The Alhambra is a famous palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain. It is a very special monument of Islamic architecture. In fact, it is the only well-preserved palace from the medieval Islamic world. The name comes from the Arabic words for "the red fortress."

Many different styles of building can be seen here. The Nasrid palaces use a style called Moorish architecture. This style often puts a courtyard at the center of the building. These courtyards usually have a fountain or a pool in the middle. In 1526, Charles V added a new palace in the Renaissance style. This new building sits right next to the older Nasrid palaces.
The decorations inside the palaces are truly amazing.

The Alhambra is a massive palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Spain. It stands as one of the most significant monuments of Islamic architecture in the world. Notably, it is the only well-preserved palace from the medieval Islamic period. The name itself is derived from the Arabic term "al-Hamra," meaning "the red fortress."
During the Nasrid era, the Alhambra functioned as a self-contained city. It was separate from the city of Granada located below the hill. The complex contained many amenities found in a typical Muslim city. These included roads, houses, artisan workshops, and even a tannery. It also featured a Friday mosque and public baths known as hammams. To support this population, builders created a sophisticated water supply system.
The architecture of the Nasrid palaces follows the tradition of Moorish architecture. A central feature of this style is the courtyard. These courtyards serve as the basic unit for organizing halls and rooms. Most courtyards feature water elements, such as a fountain or a reflective pool. Decoration was primarily focused on the interior of the buildings. Artists used tile mosaics on the lower walls for color. On the upper walls, they applied carved stucco.
Construction of the complex began in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar. He was the first Nasrid emir and the founder of the Emirate of Granada. The site was built on the Sabika hill, an outcrop of the Sierra Nevada. Earlier fortresses and a 11th-century palace once occupied this same location. Later Nasrid rulers continuously modified the site to expand its reach. The most significant construction campaigns occurred during the 14th century. These major changes happened during the reigns of Yusuf I and Muhammad V.
The history of the site changed significantly in 1492. This was the year the Christian Reconquista concluded. Following this, the Alhambra became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella. During this time, Christopher Columbus received royal endorsement for his expedition here. In 1526, Charles V commissioned a new palace in the Spanish Renaissance style. This Renaissance structure was built in direct juxtaposition to the Nasrid palaces. Over the following centuries, the Alhambra fell into a period of disrepair. Buildings were eventually occupied by squatters, and Napoleon's troops destroyed parts of it in 1812.
The complex is divided into several distinct areas and types of structures. At the western tip lies the Alcazaba, which is the fortress portion of the site.
In the 19th century, the Alhambra saw a massive revival in interest. It became a major attraction for Romantic travelers from Britain and America. One of the most influential figures was the writer Washington Irving. His book, *Tales of the Alhambra*, published in 1832, brought international attention to the site. The Alhambra was also among the first Islamic monuments to undergo modern scientific study. Since the 19th century, numerous restoration projects have helped preserve its delicate features. It remains a vital link to the medieval history of the Iberian Peninsula.
