He was a man of many talents. He was also a writer and a skilled artist. Leonov was born on May 30, 1934, in Listvyanka. His family lived through very difficult times in Russia. His father was an electrician and a miner. During the years of the Stalin purges, his father was arrested. This was a hard time for his whole family. Leonov later used his art to help find food for them. He even painted beautiful landscapes on canvases.

Leonov's most famous moment happened in the stars. On March 18, 1965, he performed a spacewalk. This is also called extravehicular activity. He left his Voskhod 2 capsule to float in space. He was connected to the craft by a tether. He stayed outside for 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

During this time, his spacesuit inflated from the vacuum of space. It became so stiff that he could not fit back inside. He had to open a valve to let some pressure out. This helped him squeeze back into the airlock safely.

Leonov spent many years training for his big jobs. He spent eighteen months learning how to work in weightlessness. He graduated from a flying school in 1957 with honors. He became a lieutenant in a parachute aviation regiment. Later, he joined a group of pilots to train as cosmonauts. He was chosen as one of twenty pilots in 1960. He was even picked to be the first Soviet person on the Moon. That specific project was later cancelled, but he remained a leader in space travel.

He achieved many great things during his long career. In July 1975, he commanded the Soyuz capsule for a special mission. This was the Apollo–Soyuz mission between the Soviet Union and the United States.

It was the first joint mission between these two nations. The two ships docked together in space for two days. Leonov was named a Hero of the Soviet Union twice. He also became a Major General of Aviation in 1975. He even worked as a deputy director for a training center.

Today, many things in science and art remember his name.

Alexei Arkhipovich Leonov was a pioneering Soviet and Russian cosmonaut, aviator, and artist. He is best known for performing the first extravehicular activity, or spacewalk, in human history. This achievement changed how humans interact with the vacuum of space. Beyond his flight accomplishments, Leonov was a Major General of Aviation and a skilled painter. He lived through significant political shifts in the Soviet Union. His life spanned the height of the Space Race and the era of international cooperation.

Leonov's historic spacewalk occurred during the Voskhod 2 mission on March 18, 1965. He exited the spacecraft and remained outside for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. During this time, he was connected to the capsule by a tether. The vacuum of space caused a dangerous physical reaction in his equipment. His spacesuit inflated significantly due to the lack of external pressure. This inflation made the suit so stiff that he could not fit through the airlock. To solve this, Leonov opened a valve to bleed off some pressure. This allowed him to successfully re-enter the capsule.

Leonov's career included several distinct stages of space exploration and leadership. He was selected as one of 20 pilots for the first cosmonaut training group in 1960. In 1968, he was chosen to command a circumlunar flight. Later, he was selected to be the first Soviet citizen to land on the Moon. Although these specific lunar projects were cancelled, they shaped his expertise. From 1976 to 1982, he served as the "Chief Cosmonaut." In this role, he was the commander of the cosmonaut team. He also worked as the deputy director of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.

His early life was shaped by the difficult period of Stalin's purges. Leonov was born on May 30, 1934, in Listvyanka, Russia. His father was an electrician and a miner. In 1936, his father was arrested and declared an "enemy of the people." Many people disappeared into remote gulags during this time. Leonov's family eventually moved to Kemerovo after his father was released. During these years, Leonov used his art to help provide food for his family. He began by drawing flowers on ovens and later painted landscapes on canvases.

Leonov's most significant diplomatic achievement was the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in July 1975. He commanded the Soyuz capsule during this historic mission. This was the first joint space mission between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet and American capsules docked together in space for two days.

This mission helped move space exploration toward international cooperation. For his service, Leonov was named a Hero of the Soviet Union twice. He also earned the USSR State Prize in 1981.

Leonov was also a prolific artist who brought creativity into orbit. He was the first person to create art in outer space. During his 1965 mission, he used colored pencils and paper to sketch an orbital sunrise.

He also drew portraits of the American Apollo astronauts. His artwork had a lasting impact on culture. The science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke even named a fictional spaceship after him in the novel *2010: Odyssey Two*. Clarke kept a sketch of Leonov's painting, *Near the Moon*, on his office wall.

Today, Leonov's legacy is preserved through many scientific and cultural honors. A crater on the far side of the Moon is named the Leonov crater. An asteroid discovered in 1981 was also named in his honor. He helped establish the Association of Space Explorers in 1985.

He even designed the reverse side of the Starmus Festival's Stephen Hawking Medal. Leonov died in Moscow on October 11, 2019, at the age of 85. He was the last living member of the five cosmonauts from the Voskhod program.
