Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin was a prominent Soviet statesman.
Kosygin's early life was shaped by the turmoil of the Russian Civil War.
During the Great Patriotic War, also known as World War II, Kosygin held critical responsibilities.
Kosygin's rise within the Soviet hierarchy was not always steady. In the early 1950s, he faced a period of political instability known as the Leningrad affair. Following the death of his patron, Andrei Zhdanov, leaders like Lavrentiy Beria and Georgy Malenkov moved against his faction. During this time, Kosygin was removed from the Politburo, which is a high-level policy-making group. He lived in constant fear for his family during these years. However, after Stalin died in 1953, Kosygin began to regain his political standing.
By the late 1950s, Kosygin had returned to significant leadership roles. He served as the chairman of the State Planning Committee, known as Gosplan, starting in 1959.
When Nikita Khrushchev was removed from power in 1964, Kosygin entered a period of collective leadership.
Despite losing his dominant position, Kosygin remained in office for many years.
