In 1917, the Russian Revolution changed everything. This was a time when the old government fell apart.

Alexander Vasilyevich Kolchak was a prominent Russian naval officer and Arctic explorer. He is primarily remembered for his leadership of the White movement during the Russian Civil War. In 1918, he assumed the title of Supreme Ruler of Russia. This role established a military dictatorship over territories controlled by the White forces.
Before his political rise, Kolchak established himself as a highly skilled scientist. He worked as an oceanographer and a cartographer, which is a person who creates maps.

Kolchak's naval career was marked by both bravery and significant responsibility. He served during the Russo-Japanese War and was wounded at the Siege of Port Arthur. After being taken as a prisoner of war in Nagasaki, he returned to Russia to help rebuild the Imperial Navy. He contributed to shipbuilding programs and helped design specialized icebreakers named Taimyr and Vaigach.
During World War I, Kolchak held major commands in the Baltic and Black Sea Fleets. He oversaw the laying of defensive minefields and led dangerous night operations. In the Black Sea, his fleet successfully attacked Turkish coal ships. This caused significant hardship for the Ottoman government because they lacked railroads to move coal.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 drastically altered his career path. After the February Revolution, Kolchak was relieved of his command in the Black Sea. He traveled to Petrograd to advise the Provisional Government on the state of the military. He argued that strict discipline and capital punishment were necessary to save the country.
Upon his return, Kolchak became a central figure in the fight against the Bolsheviks. He briefly served as the Minister of War and Navy in the Provisional All-Russian Government. Following a coup in November 1918, he was installed as the Supreme Ruler.
Kolchak's military campaign eventually faced a series of failures. After initial successes in early 1919, his forces began to lose territory. He lacked sufficient support from the local population and struggled to unite various counterrevolutionary movements. In November 1919, the Red Army captured Omsk during the Great Siberian Ice March.

The final stage of Kolchak's life was marked by political violence. In January 1920, he was handed over to local Socialist-Revolutionaries. The Bolsheviks executed him in Irkutsk the following month.
