Additionally, the battery's power would diminish over time. This happened because the hydrogen gas produced by the reaction would accumulate on the copper electrode. This buildup created a physical barrier between the metal and the electrolyte solution. Despite these issues, the pile proved that chemical energy could be converted into electrical energy. This discovery provided the foundation for all modern electrochemical research.
Volta's career was marked by immense professional success and academic influence. 
Beyond electricity, Volta made significant contributions to the study of gases. Between 1776 and 1778, he researched the chemistry of gases and discovered methane. He found the gas in the marshes of Angera on Lake Maggiore. He even demonstrated its properties by igniting it with an electric spark in a closed vessel. He also studied electrical capacitance, showing that electrical potential difference and charge are proportional. This discovery is known as Volta's Law of Capacitance. His wide range of studies helped bridge the gap between physics and chemistry.
Volta's legacy is visible in many different fields today. In biology, a species of electric eel named *Electrophorus voltai* honors his name. In technology, the name "Volta" was used for a new GPU microarchitecture by Nvidia in 2017. His personal belongings and scientific instruments are preserved in the University History Museum of the University of Pavia. Visitors can also explore the Tempio Voltiano in Como, a memorial dedicated to his life and work.
