Before entering high office, Moro built a strong foundation in law and academia. He was born on September 23, 1916, in Maglie, near Lecce. His father was a school inspector and his mother was a teacher. Moro studied law at the University of Bari and graduated in 1939. He later became a professor of the philosophy of law and criminal law. During his university years, he was active in Catholic student organizations. In 1939, he was chosen as president of the Italian Catholic Federation of University Students. This role was approved by Giovanni Battista Montini, who later became Pope Paul VI.
Moro's political career began during a period of intense transition in Italy. He helped found the Christian Democracy party in March 1943. He also contributed to the Code of Camaldoli. This document was an economic policy plan created by Italian Catholic forces. It later served as a guideline for the economic policies of the DC. In 1946, Moro was elected to the Constituent Assembly of Italy. In this role, he participated in the work to draft the Italian Constitution. He later served as the Minister of Education during the late 1950s. During this time, he introduced the study of civic education in schools.
As Prime Minister, Moro led the country through significant social and economic changes. He was a key architect of the "Organic centre-left" coalition. This government included the DC and the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Moro implemented many reforms to modernize the Italian state.
