Al Sharpton is a prominent American civil rights activist and Baptist minister.

Sharpton was born on October 3, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York.
Many influential leaders helped shape Sharpton's path toward activism. At age twelve, he met Rev. Jesse Jackson, who became a mentor. Jackson appointed Sharpton as the youth director for Operation Breadbasket in 1969. This group was the economic arm of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Sharpton was also mentored by Rev. William Jones during his teenage years. He later credited Jackson, Herb Daughtry, and Calvin Morris for starting his activism. These connections provided a foundation for his lifelong work in civil rights.
Musical icon James Brown provided another layer of mentorship. Between 1973 and 1980, Sharpton served as Brown's tour manager. Brown taught Sharpton how to use drama to draw attention to important issues. Following this advice, Sharpton began using the name "Al" instead of "Alfred." Brown also encouraged Sharpton to meet President Ronald Reagan in 1981. That meeting was intended to advocate for a national Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Brown's influence helped Sharpton gain national prominence through his public presence.
Sharpton became a central figure during several high-profile racial conflicts. In 1984, he led marches following a subway shooting in Manhattan. In 1986, he led 1,200 people in a march through Howard Beach, Queens. This followed an assault on three African-American men by a white mob. In 1989, he organized protests in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, after Yusef Hawkins was killed. During these years, Sharpton faced intense opposition from local residents. In 1991, a man named Michael Riccardi even attempted to stab him during a demonstration.
Some of Sharpton's leadership roles involved very difficult and tense social situations. In 1991, a riot occurred in Crown Heights after a car accident killed a seven-year-old boy, Gavin Cato.
Today, Sharpton remains an active voice in American politics and media. He hosts the nationally syndicated radio show "Keepin' It Real." He also serves as a political analyst for the program "PoliticsNation" on MS NOW. Through the National Action Network, he continues to advocate for community resources.
