The name al-Qaeda comes from an Arabic noun. It means "the foundation" or "the base." The prefix "al-" is the Arabic word for "the." Some people say it refers to a database. This would be a file of militants trained to fight the Soviets. In 2002, the group used the name Qa'idat Al-Jihad. This means "the base of Jihad." Jihad refers to armed struggle. The group's ideology focuses on implementing sharia law. Sharia is a system of Islamic law. They want to remove all secularist and foreign influences. They believe these influences are corrupt deviations.

The group operates through a specific structure. It uses a centralized decision-making process. However, it allows for decentralized execution. This means top leaders set the big goals. Mid-level organizations then act on their own. These mid-level groups have autonomy. They can run local operations independently. They must consult top management for large attacks. Top management includes a Shura Council. This council consists of senior members. There are also committees for military operations and finance.

In response to these attacks, the U.S. launched the war on terror. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan to depose the Taliban. In 2003, a U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq. They wrongly accused the Iraqi regime of having ties to al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda then launched a regional branch in Iraq. This branch later became the Islamic State of Iraq. This group eventually became ISIL. The U.S. military killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. He was found in Pakistan. After his death, Ayman al-Zawahiri became the leader. Today, the organization has changed significantly. It has suffered a loss of central command. It has become regionalized into several different groups. Some direct affiliates include Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Another is Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. There is also the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. Many of these groups are in the Middle East. Experts say these groups may not be closely connected. They act as separate regional movements. This fragmentation is a major part of the group's current state.
