The military administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida created Akwa Ibom. Uyo was chosen as the capital. This choice was intended to encourage development in all regions. 
The economy of Akwa Ibom is driven by natural resources. It is the highest oil-producing state in Nigeria. The state produces vast amounts of crude oil and natural gas. Several Local Government Areas are key to this production. These include Esit Eket, Eket, Onna, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi, Ibeno, Mbo, and Eastern Obolo. Other industries include agriculture. People grow substantial crops of cocoyam, yam, and plantain. Fishing and heliciculture, which is snail farming, are also important. 
Despite high oil revenues, the state faces social challenges. Akwa Ibom ranks 17th in the Human Development Index in Nigeria. This is due to years of systemic corruption. These issues have diverted money away from infrastructure and education. The state is home to many ethnic groups. The Ibibio, Annang, and Oron are the primary groups. The Ibibio are the majority and hold political sway. There are over 20 languages spoken in the state. These belong to the Benue–Congo language family. Most residents are Christians. 
Education has a long history in the region. Parts of the state were sites of early Western education in Nigeria. The Hope Waddell Training Institute was founded in 1895. The Methodist Boys' High School in Oron was founded in 1905. Today, the state has several higher institutions. These include Akwa Ibom State University and Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic. These schools help support the growing population of the state.
