This meant they actually bent the entire wing to turn. Courts eventually found that Curtiss's use of ailerons violated the Wright patent. The U.S. Government had to step in to solve the fight.

Many different people contributed to the development of flight controls. In 1904, Robert Esnault-Pelterie used ailerons on his glider. An American engineer named John J. Montgomery used spring-loaded flaps in 1885. By 1911, most biplanes used ailerons instead of wing warping. By 1915, they were almost universal on monoplanes.

Rolling is the movement of the aircraft around its longitudinal axis. This movement is also known as banking. When an aircraft banks, it changes its flight path because the lift vector tilts.

To understand the mechanism, we must look at how the surfaces interact with airflow. Ailerons work by moving in opposite directions to create an imbalance in lift. When a pilot moves the controls, one aileron moves up while the other moves down. The downward-moving aileron increases the lift on that wing. Simultaneously, the upward-moving aileron decreases the lift on the opposite wing. This difference in lift forces the aircraft to roll toward the wing with less lift.

There are different types and configurations of these surfaces in aviation history. Early designs, such as those on the 1906 Santos-Dumont 14-bis, were not true trailing-edge ailerons. Those surfaces pivoted around a horizontal axis on the interplane struts and protruded forward. In contrast, the 1909 Farman III featured ailerons hinged directly to the wing planform structure. This design is considered the ancestor of modern ailerons. Other variations include wingtip ailerons, seen on the Bleriot VIII in 1908.

The history of the aileron is marked by significant scientific discovery and legal conflict. British scientist Matthew Piers Watt Boulton is credited with the first formal description. He published a paper titled "On Aërial Locomotion" in 1864. Boulton also patented an aileron control system in 1868 under British patent No. 392.

However, his work became lost to history for many decades. Later, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss engaged in a long legal battle. The Wrights held a 1906 patent for lateral control via wing warping. Because their patent was interpreted broadly, it covered various methods of adjusting wing margins. This led to many lawsuits against other aircraft builders.

Technological shifts occurred rapidly during the early 20th century. The Wright brothers used wing warping on their 1902 glider and their Flyer II. While their designs offered excellent roll control, wing warping could weaken the wing structure. This was a major reason why engineers like Robert Esnault-Pelterie switched to ailerons. Esnault-Pelterie used ailerons on his 1904 glider to replace warping. By 1911, most biplanes had adopted ailerons. By 1915, they were nearly universal on monoplanes.

The legal tension between inventors was eventually resolved by the U.S. Government. To encourage aviation progress before World War I, the government enforced a patent pool. This allowed the Wright company to receive royalty payments of 1% instead of fighting individual builders.

Several notable figures contributed to the evolution of these controls. American engineer John J. Montgomery used spring-loaded trailing edge flaps on a glider in 1885. In 1886, he experimented with rotating the entire wing for roll control. Another pioneer, Frederick Baldwin, flew the first aileron-controlled aircraft, the AEA White Wing, on May 18, 1908.

Even early unmanned experiments existed, such as Charles Renard's 1871 glider. This device used "winglets" activated by a Boulton-style pendulum autopilot. These early steps paved the way for the standardized flight controls we use today.

Today, the aileron remains a fundamental component of aeronautical engineering. It connects the pilot's intent to the physical movement of the aircraft. The transition from wing warping to rigid wings with moving surfaces allowed for stronger, more efficient airframes. This evolution is a key part of how aerodynamics and structural engineering merged. Whether on a small light aircraft or a high-performance jet, the principle remains the same.
