One was called Nagoya Prefecture. The other was called Nukata Prefecture. Nagoya Prefecture was later renamed Aichi Prefecture in 1872. Then, it joined with Nukata Prefecture to become what it is today. The name Aichi might come from an old word, Ayuchi.

The history of Aichi involves the merging of two ancient provinces. These provinces were named Owari and Mikawa. Following the Meiji Restoration, these areas were united. In 1871, the region was briefly divided into Nagoya Prefecture and Nukata Prefecture. Nagoya Prefecture included most of Owari but not the Chita Peninsula. Nukata Prefecture combined the Chita Peninsula with Mikawa. In April 1872, Nagoya Prefecture was renamed Aichi Prefecture. Later that same year, it united with Nukata Prefecture. The name Aichi likely comes from the word Ayuchi. This refers to the Ayuchi tidal flats, now the Fujimae tidal flat.
