In 1976, he received a faculty appointment at the California Institute of Technology, or Caltech. At Caltech, he became the first faculty member to hold the Linus Pauling Chair of Chemical Physics. His journey began in Egypt, where he was born on February 26, 1946. He was raised in Desouk and received his early education in Damanhur. Zewail earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in chemistry from Alexandria University. He then moved to the United States to pursue his doctoral studies. He completed his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Robin M. Hochstrasser. His academic path eventually led him to become a global leader in chemical physics.
