Ben Bella was born on December 25, 1916, to Moroccan parents in Maghnia. His father worked as a farmer and a small-time trader. During his school years in Tlemcen, Ben Bella noticed deep social inequalities. He saw that European teachers often expressed negative views toward Muslims. This experience made him critical of French colonial influence in Algeria. He began to support nationalist movements that sought equality for all Algerians.
Before becoming a political leader, Ben Bella served in the French Army. He joined in 1936 to seek advancement under colonial rule. He was also a talented athlete who played soccer for Olympique de Marseille. In April 1940, he even scored a goal during a match against FC Antibes.
The year 1945 was a turning point in his political development. In May, large protests occurred in the town of Sétif. These events led to widespread violence and many deaths among Algerians. Ben Bella realized that France would not grant equal rights through peaceful means. He helped found the Organisation Spéciale to prepare for armed struggle. In 1949, he led a robbery of a post office in Oran. He used the 3 million francs to buy weapons for the movement.
