He was a strong leader at sea. He helped his home land grow very big. He helped build many forts.

Afonso de Albuquerque was a famous leader from Portugal. 
Afonso led many ships to far lands. He wanted to control the spice trade. Spices were very valuable goods back then. He helped build a large empire for Portugal.

His leadership was not always without conflict. In 1509, he arrived in Cannanore to take his position as governor. However, the current viceroy, Francisco de Almeida, refused to step down. 
During his governorship, Albuquerque expanded Portuguese influence through diplomacy and conquest. He captured the city of Goa in 1510. He also led the capture of Malacca in 1511. 
Albuquerque's legacy is defined by his many titles. People called him "the Terrible," "the Great," and "the Lion of the Seas."
