It expanded into southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsula.

The sultanate even allied with the Ottoman Empire. This helped Aceh compete with the Portuguese in Malacca.

Aceh has a long history of resisting outside control. In the 19th century, the Dutch colonial government declared war on Aceh. This began on March 26, 1873. The Aceh War lasted for about forty years. It was a difficult guerrilla war. The Dutch tried many different military strategies. They used naval blockades and built lines of forts. The war was very expensive for the Dutch. They spent between 15 and 20 million guilders every year. This high spending almost bankrupted their government.

During this time, the Aceh army was modernized. They even killed the Dutch commander, General Köhler.

A major disaster changed Aceh in the 21st century. On December 26, 2004, a massive earthquake and tsunami struck. The epicenter was very close to the Aceh coast. The tsunami devastated much of the western coast.

About 170,000 Indonesians were killed or went missing. Boats were washed far into towns. This tragedy was a turning point for the region. It helped lead to a peace agreement. This agreement was between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement.

Today, the Aceh Tsunami Museum stands as a memorial.

Aceh has gone through many different official names. From 1511 to 1945, it was known as Aceh Darussalam. In 1959, it became the Daerah Istimewa Aceh. It had other names like Nanggroë Aceh Darussalam between 2001 and 2009. It returned to the name Aceh in 2009. The region remains a vital part of Indonesia.
