Salam's research touched many different parts of particle physics. He made significant contributions to quantum field theory, which is the framework used to describe how particles interact. He also worked on the theory of the neutrino, an incredibly tiny and elusive particle. Salam introduced the concept of chiral symmetry to neutrino theory. This concept was essential for the later development of electroweak interactions. He also proposed the Pati-Salam model in 1974 with Jogesh Pati. This was an early attempt at a Grand Unified Theory. This group became a world-class center for research. In 1959, at the age of 33, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Salam was not just a researcher; he was a powerful leader for science in Pakistan. He served as the scientific advisor to the Ministry of Science and Technology from 1960 to 1974. During this time, he helped build the country's scientific infrastructure. He was the founding director of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, known as SUPARCO. He also established the Theoretical Physics Group in Pakistan.

However, his life in Pakistan changed in 1974. The Pakistani Parliament passed a bill declaring the Ahmadiyya community, which Salam belonged to, as non-Muslim. Because of this, Salam departed from his home country.

Even after leaving Pakistan, Salam remained dedicated to global scientific progress. He spent much of his career advocating for science in developing nations. He wanted to ensure that third-world countries had the tools to do advanced research.
