Abakan also has a complex history involving people from Europe. During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Lithuanian people were exiled to the area. These individuals participated in rebellions against Russian rule in 1794, 1830–1831, and 1863. They were held in camps and forced to work in coal mines. Later, Polish exiles were also deported to Khakassia. Many descendants of these exiles still live in the region today. This heritage is preserved through local education. A Polish school was founded in 1994. Additionally, the Khakassian State University introduced a Polish-language faculty in 1999.
