Agriculture is how we grow food. Farmers plant seeds in the dirt to grow your yummy vegetables and fruits. They also take care of animals like sheep and cows.

Agriculture is the way people grow plants and raise animals for food and clothes. Long ago, people had to move around to find wild food. About 11,500 years ago, they started planting their own seeds!

Today, humans use big tractors and even drones to help grow food. Most of the world’s fresh water is used for farming to keep crops healthy. It is a very important job because it feeds billions of people every day.

Agriculture is the practice of cultivating (growing) crops and raising livestock (animals) for food and other products. It began about 11,500 years ago when people started planting seeds instead of just gathering wild plants.

Today, agriculture provides us with food, fibers like cotton for clothes, and even fuel for cars. There are different ways to farm. Some people practice subsistence farming, where they grow just enough food to feed their own families. Others use intensive farming, which uses big machines and chemicals to grow as much food as possible on large pieces of land.

While this helps feed billions of people, it can also cause problems like water pollution and soil damage. Farming is a very important job around the world. About 27% of all workers in the world are in agriculture.

In some places, like sub-Saharan Africa, more than half of all workers are farmers. Scientists are now using new technology, like drones and special seeds, to help farmers grow more food while using less water.

Agriculture is the science and practice of farming, including the cultivation of soil for crops and the rearing of animals. It was the foundation of human civilization because it allowed people to live in permanent cities instead of moving around to find food.

Farming began over 11,000 years ago in different parts of the world. Early farmers domesticated plants like wheat and rice, and animals like sheep, goats, and cattle. In North America, indigenous people used a clever system called the "Three Sisters," where they grew corn, beans, and squash together so the plants could help each other grow. In the 20th century, farming changed with the use of new technology and chemicals. This is called industrial agriculture.

While it helps produce about 11 billion tonnes of food every year, it also creates challenges. Modern farms often use monocultures, which means they grow only one type of crop over a huge area. This makes it easier for pests to spread, so farmers use pesticides (chemicals to kill bugs) and fertilizers to help crops grow. However, these chemicals can leak into water and hurt the environment. Today, about 40% of the world's farmland is considered degraded or worn out.

Agriculture is a major source of jobs, employing about 873 million people worldwide.

In many poor countries, more than half of the people work in farming. It is also a very dangerous job. Farmers can be injured by big machines like tractors, or get sick from being in the sun too long or using strong chemicals. Women are a huge part of the workforce, especially in Africa and Asia, but they often have less access to tools and earn less money than men.

The future of farming involves using more technology, like drones and robots, to help grow food more carefully. This is called agricultural automation.

These tools are important because climate change is making it harder to farm in many places. To feed the world in the year 2050, we will need to produce 50% more food than we do now, while also finding ways to protect our water and soil.

Agriculture, from the Latin "ager" (field) and "cultura" (cultivation), is the practice of growing crops and raising livestock to produce food, fiber, and raw materials.

It was the catalyst for sedentary human civilization, as food surpluses allowed people to live in cities. While humans gathered wild grains 105,000 years ago, they began planting them around 11,500 years ago. Domestication of animals like sheep and cattle followed shortly after. Agriculture emerged independently in at least 11 different regions, from the rice paddies of China to the potato fields of the Andes.

In North America, indigenous peoples developed the "Three Sisters" system, growing maize, beans, and squash together. Later, the British Agricultural Revolution and the Haber-Bosch method for creating synthetic fertilizer allowed the global population to rise significantly. In the modern era, the scale of farming has shifted dramatically.

As of 2021, small farms (under 2 hectares) make up five out of every six farms but occupy only 12% of agricultural land. In contrast, large farms over 50 hectares encompass more than 70% of the world's farmland. Global production is massive, totaling approximately 11 billion tonnes of food and 32 million tonnes of natural fibers annually.

China currently leads the world in agricultural output, followed by the European Union, India, and the United States. However, efficiency remains a challenge, as roughly 14% of food is lost before it even reaches stores. Technological advancement has defined contemporary agriculture. The Green Revolution of the 20th century used hybridization to create high-yielding varieties of wheat and corn.

Today, biotechnology allows for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), which are engineered for traits like resistance to pests or tolerance to herbicides. While these tools have increased yields—for example, US corn yields rose from 2.5 tons per hectare in 1900 to 9.4 tons in 2001—they also raise concerns about food safety and environmental health. Automation is the next frontier, with drones, AI-driven sensors, and autonomous tractors helping to manage crops with greater precision. The environmental impact of agriculture is profound. It accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals and is a primary driver of deforestation, causing nearly 90% of forest loss.

The sector contributes between 13% and 21% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with livestock being a major source of methane and nitrous oxide. Furthermore, 40% of the world's agricultural land is seriously degraded. Climate change further complicates this, as rising temperatures and unpredictable weather patterns threaten yields, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, where nearly 50% of cropland is at risk. The agricultural workforce is another critical aspect of the industry.

In 2021, 873 million people were employed in agriculture, representing 27% of the global workforce. In low-income countries, this figure can be as high as 60%. Women play a vital role, making up about 47% of the agricultural workforce in sub-Saharan Africa.

Despite their importance, women face significant inequalities, earning 18.4% less than men and having less access to essential resources like fertilizers and mechanized equipment. Additionally, farming remains one of the most hazardous sectors, with an estimated 170,000 work-related deaths annually. Looking forward, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that agriculture must produce 50% more food by 2050 to feed a growing population. Achieving this will require a shift toward more sustainable practices, such as regenerative agriculture and improved water management, to protect the natural resources that farming depends on.
